Story & heritage
American Optical says the Original Pilot was first developed in 1958 for American military pilots, then known as the FG-58. The official product page connects the frame to Apollo survival kits, while the brand history records the HGU-4/P style as a military-issue design also used by NASA astronauts.
Its icon status comes from restraint: a flatter, semi-rectangular aviator lens, a purposeful bridge, and bayonet temples built to slip under helmets or headgear rather than shout for attention.
Materials & craft
The current model is made in the USA from premium components, with sizes from 52 to 57 mm, AOLite™ nylon or SkyMaster™ glass lens choices, optional polarization, and bayonet temples. Gold versions use 23K plating according to AO.
How to choose & style
Choose Calobar green for the pure service-issue read, grey for the quietest everyday version, or gold plating when you want the frame to feel more vintage. The bayonet temple makes it especially easy with caps, helmets and headphones.
