A Vanitas

The Hannah Martin collaboration that turns Vanitas symbolism into razor, dog-tag and skull jewellery.

Story & heritage

Applied Art Forms’ official Origins page says A Vanitas began when Guy Berryman and jeweller Hannah Martin met by chance on a Los Angeles to London flight, just as Berryman was considering jewellery for the clothing brand.

The collaboration takes its jumping-off point from 17th-century Dutch Vanitas paintings and translates that memento-mori theme into razor-blade motifs, pearl skulls, dog tags and hospital-ID-style bracelets.

Materials & craft

The Hannah Martin product page for the Razor Dog Tag Pendant lists sterling silver for the large pendant; the official collection page also shows A Vanitas pieces in yellow gold, sterling silver and pearl.

How to choose & style

Use A Vanitas as the sharp counterpoint to A/A/F cloth: a single pendant over a tee, under a smock, or against black leather keeps the jewellery emotional without making the clothing feel precious.
