Aveeno is an American skin- and hair-care brand founded in 1945 by brothers Albert and Sidney Musher, working with the Mayo Clinic — and its name comes straight from the plant at its heart, the common oat, Avena sativa.

The brothers discovered that finely milled colloidal oatmeal could soothe dry, sensitive skin, and their first product was a Soothing Bath Treatment; colloidal oats and their avenanthramides — branded "active naturals" — remain the active ingredients across the line. Aveeno makes products aimed at conditions from eczema and psoriasis to sunburn, under the slogan "Better Ingredients. Better Skincare."

Purchased by Johnson & Johnson in 1999 and repositioned as a high-end natural skincare brand, Aveeno expanded into baby care and facial care, with its Positively Radiant line in 2004. In 2023 Johnson & Johnson spun off its consumer-health business, including Aveeno, as Kenvue, which was acquired by Kimberly-Clark in 2025.

Aveeno shopping FAQ

Is Aveeno's Daily Moisturizing Lotion worth it?+

If you want a fuss-free everyday moisturizer for normal to dry skin, it earns its place. The colloidal oatmeal that defines every Aveeno product is meant to calm and soften without a heavy, greasy finish, which is why so many people reach for it after a shower. It is gentle, widely available, and easy to live with day after day.

Is Aveeno good for sensitive skin?+

That is the brand's whole reason for being. Aveeno was born in 1945 when brothers Albert and Sidney Musher, working with the Mayo Clinic, found that finely milled colloidal oatmeal could soothe dry, sensitive skin. Their very first product was a Soothing Bath Treatment, and oat has anchored the line ever since for eczema, itch, and easily irritated skin.

How is Aveeno different from Cetaphil?+

Both are gentle, dermatologist-friendly staples, but they lean on different stars. Aveeno's signature is colloidal oatmeal, prized for calming and soothing irritated skin, while Cetaphil built its name on minimal, barrier-friendly cleansing. If oat-based comfort for itchy or reactive skin is your priority, Aveeno is the natural pick.

What is colloidal oatmeal, and why does Aveeno use it?+

Colloidal oats and their oat extracts, known as avenanthramides, are the active ingredient in every Aveeno product, branded as Active Naturals. The name Aveeno itself comes from Avena sativa, the scientific name for the common oat. It is the through-line that connects the bath soaks, lotions, and face care across the whole range.

Which Aveeno product should I try first?+

For most people the Daily Moisturizing Lotion is the friendliest introduction, since it shows off the oat-based comfort the brand is known for in an everyday format. If your skin runs especially itchy or reactive, the soothing bath and body care that grew out of Aveeno's original 1945 bath treatment is a gentler starting point.

Where can I buy genuine Aveeno?+

Aveeno is a mass-market skincare brand, so you will find it widely in drugstores, supermarkets, and major online retailers. To be sure you are getting the real thing, stick to established sellers and the brand's official storefronts rather than unfamiliar marketplace listings.

What does Aveeno offer beyond lotion?+

Quite a lot. Over the years the brand expanded into baby care, body wash, and facial care, including the Positively Radiant line launched in 2004 around an Active Soy ingredient, plus dedicated acne, calming, and anti-aging ranges. Oat remains the common thread, but Aveeno now spans face, body, and baby.

Who owns Aveeno now?+

Aveeno is owned by the American consumer health company Kenvue. The brand passed through several hands over the decades, including S.C. Johnson & Son and then Johnson & Johnson, before J&J spun off its consumer health business as Kenvue in 2023. In 2025, Kenvue was acquired by Kimberly-Clark.

Is Aveeno connected to Jennifer Aniston?+

Yes. In January 2013, Jennifer Aniston was announced as Aveeno's spokesperson, becoming the face of the brand. She succeeded Daniella van Graas, who had represented Aveeno for many years.

Has Aveeno faced any controversy?+

It has. Aveeno was criticized for selling products containing microbeads, the tiny plastic balls that escape sewage treatment and reach the ocean, and parent company Johnson & Johnson pledged to remove them by 2017. Separately, in July 2021, J&J recalled several Aveeno and Neutrogena aerosol spray sunscreens in the US after detecting benzene.

When is the best time to buy skincare like Aveeno?+

Because Aveeno is an everyday drugstore staple, you rarely need to wait for a special moment. Larger seasonal sales and value-size bottles can stretch your money on something you use daily, but the more practical tip is simply to buy the size and formula your skin actually uses up before it expires.

Is Aveeno backed by science?+

Its origins are clinical. The brand grew out of research carried out with the Mayo Clinic in 1945, where the soothing effect of finely milled colloidal oatmeal on dry, sensitive skin was first put to use. Colloidal oatmeal has remained the cornerstone active ingredient across the line ever since.
