Bebe is the American women's brand founded in San Francisco in 1976 by Manny Mashouf — its name drawn from Hamlet's "To be or not to be".

Mashouf opened the first store on Polk Street to fill a gap between the junior, bridge and misses categories then dominating womenswear, building the brand around figure-conscious apparel, accessories and fragrance. Campaign faces over the years included Mischa Barton, Rebecca Romijn and Eva Longoria, with singer Bebe Rexha fronting a 2019 campaign.

After a long retail run, Bebe announced in 2017 that it would close its remaining brick-and-mortar stores and continue online, partnering with Global Brands Group to keep e-commerce and international stores running.

Bebe shopping FAQ

Is Bebe good quality and worth buying?+

Bebe is known for glamorous, body-conscious womenswear, and the brand emphasizes engineered fit with stretch and flattering construction. Many shoppers are happy with the style and the look for the price; as with any fast-moving fashion label, experiences vary by piece, so it helps to read the details on the exact item rather than judging the whole brand at once.

What is Bebe best known for?+

Bebe is best known for women's apparel, accessories, and fragrances, with a glamorous, close-fitting signature. The brand develops and produces dresses and going-out pieces, and over the years it has marketed lines under names such as Bebe, Bebe Sport, and Bebe Outlet. Its rhinestone-encrusted logo pieces became part of its identity in pop culture.

Where does the name Bebe come from?+

It's a literary reference. The name is derived from the soliloquy in Shakespeare's Hamlet, in which the prince ponders "To be or not to be..." Interestingly, the company was actually called "Babe, Inc." until it held its initial public offering in 1998, when it adopted the Bebe name we know.

Who founded Bebe and when?+

Bebe was founded by the Iranian-American businessman Manny Mashouf in 1976. He opened the first store in San Francisco at a time when the women's market was dominated by three categories, junior, bridge, and misses, and positioned Bebe to stand apart from them.

Where did the first Bebe store open?+

The first store opened in San Francisco in 1976, on Polk Street. From that single location the brand grew across the United States and into international markets before shifting its strategy in later years.

Is Bebe still in business with physical stores?+

Bebe pivoted away from its own brick-and-mortar footprint. On April 21, 2017, the company announced it would close its remaining physical locations and sell online, becoming an online-focused retailer. It later partnered with Global Brands Group to keep e-commerce and international stores running, and opened a lifestyle concept store in New York City in 2018.

What was Bebe Sport?+

Bebe launched BebeSport in 2003 to focus on an active lifestyle, offering sportswear, tops, sweaters, outerwear, and accessories. In 2009 the BebeSport stores were converted to a concept called PH8, and the BebeSport product was then sold within Bebe and 2b Bebe stores instead of standalone locations.

Did Bebe ever make wedding dresses?+

Briefly. In 2012 Bebe launched a bridal wear line available in stores across the United States, debuting with a collection designed by Project Runway runner-up Rami Kashou. The brand considered adding bridal salons, but the venture was eventually dropped due to poor sales.

Which celebrities have been the face of Bebe?+

Bebe has long signed celebrities for its campaigns. Rebecca Romijn fronted Bebe from spring 2007 through spring 2008, Eva Longoria was the face of BebeSport from 2007 through 2009, and Mischa Barton, Brenda Song, and later singer Bebe Rexha have all appeared in its advertising.

How does Bebe design and make its clothing?+

The company designs and develops the majority of its merchandise in-house and uses outsourced manufacturing. That in-house design focus is part of why the brand keeps a consistent, recognizable glamorous aesthetic across its dresses, tops, and accessories.

How should I think about fit when buying Bebe?+

Bebe leans toward close-fitting, body-conscious silhouettes, and the brand emphasizes engineering its fabrics for stretch and a flattering fit. Because pieces are often cut to hug the body, checking the specific item's stretch and measurements before buying is the best way to land the look you want.
