Story & heritage
Bibi van der Velden launched her namesake Wearable Works of Art brand in 2006 after training as a sculptor, and this jewel shows how the house turns natural forms into compact, animated sculpture.
A captivating addition to the Animal Collection, playful yet with an opulent glamour, the Alligator Wrap Ring is intriguing in its delicate mechanism. Designed as an intricately-crafted alligator in 18K yellow gold, the ring is entirely articulated, so that its body wraps around the finger. The alligator's jaws snap to secure the ring shut, with the catch clicked open and closed with a button inset into the creature's head. Displaying the signature Bibi van der Velden's attention to detail, the alligator's tail moves from side to side, while its tiny legs move, too. Its eyes, meanwhile, glisten with green Tsavorites.
Materials & craft
The piece is grounded in 18K yellow gold, articulated body, tsavorite eyes, materials and construction details cited by the brand or the current retail listing.
How to choose & style
Let the motif lead: wear it as the single surreal note against crisp tailoring, or stack it with quieter gold pieces when you want the bestiary mood to feel collected rather than costume-like.
The strongest versions are the ones whose stones echo your wardrobe palette, because the sculptural silhouette already carries plenty of visual weight.
