The house rose through the 1970s, worn by Jacqueline Kennedy and Gloria Vanderbilt, and expanded into swimwear, furs, perfume and beyond. Blass took American sportswear, in the words of The New York Times, "to its highest level… a clean, modern, impeccable style"; the brand's keystones are exuberant color, embellishment and the casual American spirit. He sold the company in 2000.
Renamed Bill Blass Group after a 2008 acquisition, the label cycled through designers including Peter Som, Michael Bastian and, in a 2014 rebranding, Chris Benz — each returning to Blass's idea of relaxed, modern American style.
