Founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham, Byredo takes its name from a portmanteau of by redolence — and opened with a single fragrance, Green.

From that first scent the house expanded outward: handbags and accessories debuted at Paris Fashion Week in 2017, and fine jewelry joined as a permanent category in 2023. Along the way Byredo became known for its collaborators, working with Virgil Abloh, IKEA, Isamaya Ffrench and Travis Scott, among others.

Gorham sold a majority stake to London investment firm Manzanita Capital in 2013, and in 2022 Spanish conglomerate Puig acquired a majority stake to bolster its high-end portfolio — with Gorham staying on as a shareholder and chief creative officer.

Byredo shopping FAQ

Is Byredo Gypsy Water worth it?+

Gypsy Water is one of Byredo's most recommended scents, loved for a soft, woody freshness that many find quietly addictive. The most common criticism is longevity, which some feel runs light for the price, so it suits people who enjoy reapplying or like a closer, more intimate trail. Trying it on skin first is the surest way to judge, since Byredo's appeal is as much about mood as projection.

Why is Byredo so expensive?+

Byredo is a Swedish house that produces luxury fragrances, leather goods and accessories, and it trades on a niche, artistic reputation rather than mass appeal. Founder Ben Gorham has positioned the brand around personal, memory-led storytelling and high-quality materials, which places it well above mainstream designer fragrance. The price reflects that niche luxury positioning as much as the ingredients.

What does the name Byredo mean?+

Byredo is a portmanteau of by redolence, redolence meaning a strong, evocative fragrance or scent-memory. It is a fitting name for a house whose founder builds scents around feeling and recollection. The brand has used that name since it was founded in 2006.

Which Byredo fragrance came first?+

The first fragrance Byredo ever released was Green, built on sage, orange and musk. It set the tone for the house's clean, evocative style and remains a touchstone for understanding where the brand began. From that single launch Byredo has grown into one of the most recognised niche fragrance names.

Who founded Byredo and where?+

Byredo was founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham, and it remains a Swedish company at heart. Gorham built it as a niche, design-led fragrance house, and even after later changes in ownership he has continued to shape its creative direction. That founder-led vision is central to the brand's identity.

Who owns Byredo now?+

In May 2022 the Spanish conglomerate Puig acquired a majority stake in Byredo to strengthen its high-end luxury portfolio. Crucially, founder Ben Gorham stayed on as a shareholder and chief creative officer, so the brand's creative voice continued under new ownership. An earlier majority stake had been held from 2013 by the London-based investment firm Manzanita Capital.

Does Byredo make more than perfume?+

Yes. Byredo describes itself as a maker of luxury fragrances, leather goods and accessories, and it has steadily widened that scope. Its first collection of handbags and other accessories debuted at Paris Fashion Week in 2017, and in November 2023 the brand added fine jewelry as a new permanent category. It has grown from a fragrance house into a broader luxury label.

Is Byredo a good niche brand for someone new to fragrance?+

Byredo is a friendly entry into the niche world because its scents tend to be wearable and evocative rather than challenging, starting from its very first release, Green. The trade-off is price, which sits firmly in luxury territory. Sampling a few before buying a full bottle is the wise route, since the brand's range spans quite different moods.

What notable collaborations has Byredo done?+

Byredo has a strong track record of cross-disciplinary collaborations, releasing projects with perfumer Jérôme Epinette, photographers Inez and Vinoodh, designer Virgil Abloh in 2018, furniture company IKEA in 2020, makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench, and US rapper Travis Scott in 2021. These partnerships reflect the brand's roots in art and design rather than conventional fragrance marketing.

How does Byredo compare to other niche fragrance houses?+

Byredo sits among the modern niche perfumers, often discussed alongside houses like Le Labo, and shares their preference for distinctive, story-led scents over mainstream crowd-pleasers. Its Scandinavian, design-driven sensibility and founder Ben Gorham's memory-led approach are what set it apart. If you want a niche scent with a clean, contemporary identity, Byredo is a strong place to look.
