Carla Zampatti produced her first collection in 1965 and built one of Australia's most enduring fashion houses — clothes worn for decades, and remembered as sustainable before the word.

Born in 1938 in Lovero, Italy, and raised in Western Australia, Carla Zampatti produced her first collection in 1965 and established Carla Zampatti Limited in 1970, opening her first boutique in Surry Hills, Sydney, in 1972 and growing to some 30 boutiques across Australia. She was among the first Australian designers to introduce swimwear, in 1973.

Worn by Queen Mary of Denmark, Tina Arena and Delta Goodrem, Zampatti was appointed a Member, then Companion, of the Order of Australia, named the industry's Designer of the Year in 1994, and given the Australian Fashion Laureate in 2008. Her daughter Bianca Spender designs under her own name. After Zampatti's death in 2021, the label continued under family leadership.

Carla Zampatti shopping FAQ

Are Carla Zampatti dresses worth it?+

For an Australian house built on tailoring, many wearers treat the pieces as long-term investments rather than seasonal buys. The label is known for meticulous construction and quality fabrics, and one early dress bought in 1967 was still being worn for special occasions decades later. Opinions on value vary, but the craftsmanship is rarely in dispute.

What is Carla Zampatti best known for?+

Refined, wearable womenswear that helped define how Australian women dress. Carla Zampatti built one of Australia's most enduring fashion houses on elegant tailoring with a sense of ease, dressing the country's leading women across more than five decades. Her clothes were appreciated from the very beginning of her career.

Who was Carla Zampatti?+

She was an Italian-born Australian fashion designer and businesswoman (19 May 1938 – 3 April 2021) and the executive chair of her namesake label. Born in Lovero in Lombardy, Italy, she moved to Australia in 1950, produced her first small collection in 1965, and established Carla Zampatti Limited in 1970.

Where is the Carla Zampatti label from?+

It is a Sydney-rooted Australian house. Zampatti moved to Sydney in 1963 and opened her first boutique in 1972 in Surry Hills, then grew the company into a chain of around 30 boutiques and concept stores across Australia, later moving into David Jones and Myer department stores.

Who runs Carla Zampatti now?+

It remains a family business. After the designer's death in 2021, her children carried the label forward, with Alex Schuman as CEO of Carla Zampatti Pty Ltd. Her daughter Allegra Spender had earlier served as managing director, and her daughter Bianca Spender is a designer in her own right.

What is the connection between Carla Zampatti and Bianca Spender?+

Bianca Spender is Carla Zampatti's daughter and a designer. She spent her childhood in her mother's studio, which led her to study fashion in Paris, then joined Carla Zampatti Limited with her own capsule collection from 2004 before launching her own namesake brand in 2017.

Which Carla Zampatti piece should I buy first?+

A well-cut dress is the natural starting point, since refined tailoring and a sense of occasion are the heart of the house. The label's strength is timeless, season-spanning pieces meant to stay in rotation for years rather than trend-driven one-offs, so a versatile dress or a sharply tailored jacket rewards the investment.

Has Carla Zampatti dressed any notable women?+

Yes, many Australian icons and beyond. Wearers have included singer Tina Arena, Queen Mary of Denmark, Dannii Minogue, Delta Goodrem and broadcaster Ita Buttrose, reflecting the label's standing as a go-to for prominent Australian women.

Did Carla Zampatti design anything besides clothing?+

She ranged well beyond the runway. She was among the first Australian designers to introduce swimwear, in 1973, created designer eyewear for Polaroid, and launched her first perfume, 'Carla', in 1983, followed by 'Bellezza' in 1987. In partnership with Ford Australia, she even redesigned a car for the women's market, beginning with a Laser in 1985.

What honours did Carla Zampatti receive?+

A great many. She was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1987 and elevated to Companion in 2009, named Designer of the Year by the Australian fashion industry in 1994, and awarded the Australian Fashion Laureate in 2008, the industry's highest honour. Italy also appointed her a Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2004.

Why is the Carla Zampatti label considered an enduring part of Australian fashion?+

Because it grew alongside the women it dressed. From 1965 onward the house balanced refined tailoring with ease, shaping Australian womenswear through decades of social change, and its founder became one of the country's most influential designers and businesswomen. That continuity, now carried on by her family, is what gives the label its lasting standing.
