Certina

Double Security since 1959 — Swiss-made watches engineered to survive the Himalayas and the deep.

Certina
Re-checked daily
Certina was founded in Grenchen in 1888 by brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth — a movement and supplies workshop connected to the family home that grew into a Swiss watch house, every piece carrying the 'Swiss Made' seal.

The house made its name on toughness. In 1959 it created the DS — Double Security concept, suspending the movement inside a reinforced case for shock protection and water resistance; a Certina survived a team's ascent of Dhaulagiri in the Himalayas. It produced a digital watch as early as 1936 and the biorhythm-displaying Biostar in 1971.

Part of the Swatch Group since 1983, Certina sits today alongside Tissot and Mido. In 2014 it adopted a turtle emblem — a nod to its protection against water and shock — as it moved into a higher-quality segment.

Certina shopping FAQ

Are Certina watches worth it?+

Certina is one of the quieter value picks in Swiss watchmaking: a real Swiss Made brand inside the Swatch Group, usually sold for noticeably less than its sibling names. You are paying for the engineering behind the DS "Double Security" concept rather than for marketing noise. For a buyer who wants dependable Swiss build without chasing a logo, it is an easy watch to recommend.

Are Certina watches good quality?+

Yes, and the brand's reputation rests on the DS "Double Security" idea introduced in 1959, which suspended the movement inside a heavily reinforced case to boost shock protection and water resistance. Today's Certinas use 316L stainless steel, sapphire glass and ETA Swiss-made movements as standard. The result is a watch built around protection, which is exactly what the DS turtle on the dial signals.

Which Certina should I buy first?+

If you want the brand at its most characteristic, start in the Aqua collection with the DS Action or DS Action Diver, the line that carries the Double Security DNA into a modern sports watch. Those who prefer something dressier can look to the Heritage collection's DS-1 or the DS Powermatic 80. Begin with a DS model, since the DS feature is the whole reason Certina exists.

Certina DS Action Diver or Tissot Seastar?+

Both come from the Swatch Group and sit in a similar price band, so it largely comes down to taste. The Certina leans traditional and understated and is built around its DS shock-and-water protection, while the Seastar offers a wider, more experimental range of looks. Choose the DS Action Diver if you want a classic, no-drama diver; reach for the Seastar if you want more design variety.

What does the DS in Certina mean?+

DS stands for Double Security, a concept Hans and Edwin Kurth set out in 1959. They suspended the movement inside a highly reinforced case, the first watches to push shock protection and water resistance up to 6 metres when rivals stopped around 2.2 metres. It is Certina's signature engineering and the reason the brand became known for sports watches.

Where and when was Certina founded?+

Certina was founded in 1888 in Grenchen, Switzerland, when brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth opened a movement and supplies factory connected to the family home. They started with just three employees making movements for other companies before producing complete watches. The Grenchen roots and that family beginning still anchor the brand's story.

What does the name Certina mean?+

The Certina name comes from the Latin certus, meaning "assured" or "certain," and was adopted in 1938 as the trademark for export and marketing. Before that the founders had called their watches "Grana," short for the Latin name for Grenchen. The chosen name leans into the brand's promise of reliability.

Why does the Certina logo have a turtle?+

In 2014 Certina replaced its older red logo with a new mark featuring a turtle, chosen to symbolise protection against water and shocks, the very things the DS concept was built for. The change came as the brand moved to a more premium, higher-quality position to distinguish itself from Tissot within the Swatch family. So the turtle is shorthand for Double Security.

Is Certina a real Swiss watch brand?+

It is. Every Certina carries the Swiss Made seal of origin, and the company has been a member of the Swatch Group since the early 1980s. It should not be confused with the unrelated German industrial firm Certina Holding. The watch brand is the Grenchen-born Swiss one founded in 1888.

What is Certina best known for historically?+

Beyond the DS concept, Certina has a few genuine firsts: it produced a spring-driven digital watch in 1936 and introduced the Biostar in 1971, billed as the world's first watch to display human biorhythms. A DS-equipped Certina also went up the Himalayas on a team climbing Dhaulagiri and survived the changes in pressure and altitude. These milestones cement its reputation as an engineering-led sports brand.

How water-resistant are Certina dive watches?+

Certina builds serious water resistance into its sports lines, with some models claimed to perform to depths of 300 metres. That capability is rooted in the original DS work, which first raised water resistance to 6 metres back in 1959 and has been extended ever since. Always match the rating to how you actually plan to use the watch.
