Charles Jeffrey launched LOVERBOY in 2015 after Central Saint Martins, an aesthetic made in that club space — the East London queer club night he started in 2014 to fund his MA.

Born in Bellshill in 1990, Jeffrey trained under Louise Wilson at Central Saint Martins — tutor to Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane — and interned at Dior's haute couture ateliers. His graduation show drew Fashion East's Lulu Kennedy, and his work moved through the MAN platform before his first solo show in June 2017. His collections weave in Scottish heritage: kilts, tartan and a signature LOVERBOY tartan introduced in 2017.

Described as "speaking to young London the way Alexander McQueen spoke to his generation," Jeffrey has won the British Fashion Award for Emerging Talent: Menswear (2017) and GQ's Breakthrough Designer (2018), and was an LVMH Prize finalist. His pieces have been worn by Harry Styles, Tilda Swinton and BTS's J-Hope.

Charles Jeffrey shopping FAQ

Is Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY worth it?+

If you want clothes with genuine creative point of view rather than logo-led streetwear, LOVERBOY makes a strong case. The label is punk-inspired and gender-fluid, built on craft and imagination instead of passing trends, which is part of why pieces stay relevant. You are buying into an art-school sensibility and a real movement, so it suits a buyer who values character over conformity.

What should I buy from Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY first?+

The knitwear and the tartan are the heart of the label, so they are the natural place to start. Jeffrey designed a signature LOVERBOY tartan that debuted in his Autumn/Winter 2018 collection, "Tantrum," and his Scottish heritage runs through the kilts and tartan throughout the line. A knit or a tartan piece gives you the most recognizable, most LOVERBOY thing in the wardrobe.

How does Charles Jeffrey compare to Vivienne Westwood?+

They share a punk lineage, and Jeffrey openly references it; in his Paris debut he sent out knitted caps with devil's horns as a nod to Westwood. But the comparison is one of inheritance rather than rivalry. Jeffrey's work runs on London's queer club energy and his Scottish roots, so think of LOVERBOY as carrying that British punk tradition forward into a new generation.

Is Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY good quality?+

The label is positioned as creative ready-to-wear rather than mass production, and the knitwear in particular is a craft showcase. Because so much of the appeal is in unusual construction and hand-finished detail, quality and character go together here. As with any independent designer label, inspect the specific piece, but the brand's reputation rests on its making as much as its ideas.

What is Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY known for?+

It is known for punk-inspired, gender-fluid designs drawn from the designer's Scottish heritage and London's queer club scene. The shows themselves are a signature: they are theatrical performances as much as fashion shows, often staged with theatre and dance professionals, with the 2017 "Tantrum" show described as one that would be talked about for years.

When was Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY founded?+

Jeffrey launched the label in 2015, after graduating from Central Saint Martins. It grew directly out of a monthly club night of the same name he had started at Vogue Fabrics in Dalston in 2014 to help fund his MA, so the brand and the club night are inseparable.

Who is Charles Jeffrey, the designer?+

Charles Jeffrey is a Scottish fashion designer and DJ born on 1 August 1990 in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire. He studied an Art Foundation and an MA in Fashion at Central Saint Martins, tutored by Louise Wilson, who also taught Christopher Kane and Alexander McQueen, and interned at Dior's haute couture ateliers in Paris before launching his own label.

Why does Charles Jeffrey use so much tartan?+

Tartan is a direct expression of his Scottish heritage, which runs through the collections alongside kilts and references to Scottish traditions. He created his own signature LOVERBOY tartan in 2017, debuting it in the AW18 "Tantrum" collection, turning a national motif into a personal brand signature.

Has Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY won awards?+

Yes, the label was recognized early. Jeffrey won the British Fashion Award for Emerging Talent: Menswear in December 2017 and the GQ Men of the Year Breakthrough Designer Award in 2018, and he was a finalist for the LVMH Prize that year. He was also named to the Business of Fashion 500 in 2016 as one of fashion's most influential people.

Who has worn Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY?+

The brand has been worn by a strikingly wide range of figures, including Harry Styles, Tilda Swinton, Bimini Bon Boulash and K-pop star J-Hope of BTS. Jeffrey has been described as speaking to young London the way Alexander McQueen spoke to his generation, which gives a sense of the cultural register the clothes occupy.

Does Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY make womenswear?+

It does. While the label made its name in menswear, it launched its first womenswear capsule, "Awrite Hen?", in 2018, exclusively for Matches Fashion. Jeffrey noted the women in his life had worn the collections from the beginning, so the womenswear was a natural extension rather than a departure.

Where did the LOVERBOY aesthetic come from?+

It was forged in a nightclub. Jeffrey credits the LOVERBOY club night at Vogue Fabrics, which he started in 2014, as the place the clothes were made and the label's look took shape. He has described it as a "no-rules nocturnal laboratory" inspired by 1980s clubs like Blitz and Taboo and performers such as Leigh Bowery and Boy George.
