Ed Hardy
Re-checked daily
Ed Hardy is an American fashion brand built on the work of tattoo artist Don Ed Hardy, whose flash-art tigers, koi and roses turned a subculture into a global label.

In the early 2000s Hardy licensed his artwork into a clothing line, but the brand exploded under Christian Audigier, formerly of Von Dutch, who took worldwide rights in 2005 and marketed directly to celebrities, opening stores from San Francisco to Dubai. At its 2009 peak the brand grossed more than $700 million.

The boom collapsed almost as fast; Hardy regained control in 2010, blaming the fall on Audigier's marketing. Iconix Brand Group acquired a majority stake from 2009, with Hardy retaining a 15% minority interest. The brand relaunched in Europe in 2018 and held its first fashion show in Los Angeles in 2024.

Ed Hardy shopping FAQ

Is Ed Hardy still popular and worth wearing?+

After fading at the turn of the 2010s, Ed Hardy has found new life with the Y2K revival and a younger crowd. Whether it is worth wearing is a style call: the tattoo-flash graphics are bold and unmistakable, so it rewards people who want a loud, nostalgic statement. The brand even staged its first fashion show in LA in 2024, a sign of its return.

How do I spot a fake Ed Hardy shirt?+

Counterfeits are common, so check the details. Genuine pieces use quality printing and proper licensed tags, and prices are not rock-bottom, so a brand-new tee for a few dollars is a red flag. Buy from reputable sellers, be wary of anyone offering huge quantities of identical stock, and compare the artwork closely against official imagery.

Ed Hardy vs Von Dutch: what's the connection?+

They share a person. Christian Audigier built Von Dutch's early-2000s buzz, then took the worldwide rights to Ed Hardy in 2005 and applied the same playbook of celebrity marketing and high-profile stores. The difference: Von Dutch traded on a logo, while Ed Hardy is built on Don Ed Hardy's actual tattoo artwork, so the appeal is the graphics themselves.

Who is the Ed Hardy behind the brand?+

The brand is based on the work of Don Ed Hardy, an American tattoo artist whose flash-style designs, dragons, tigers, roses, skulls, became the label's visual language. In the early 2000s he licensed his artwork for clothing, and despite the brand's ups and downs he still retains a 15% minority stake in it.

Why did Ed Hardy blow up and then crash?+

Under Christian Audigier the brand exploded, peaking above $700 million in gross revenue in 2009 through aggressive celebrity marketing. It then collapsed within two years and many stores closed. Don Ed Hardy blamed creative and marketing choices, including Audigier putting his own name all over the products and tying the brand to short-lived reality-TV fame.

Who owns Ed Hardy now?+

The brand is owned by Iconix Brand Group, which first took a 50% interest in 2009 and grew it to 85% by 2011. Don Ed Hardy holds the remaining 15% minority stake. Hardy regained control from Audigier in 2010 after legal battles, with Audigier's company keeping a limited licence for certain items.

What products does Ed Hardy actually make?+

At its peak the brand licensed an enormous range, around 70 sublicensees covering clothing, accessories, lighters, perfume, hair styling tools and more. The signature item, though, has always been the graphic tee and hoodie carrying Don Ed Hardy's tattoo artwork. Fragrances also remain a well-known part of the lineup.

What are the signature Ed Hardy motifs?+

The look is pure tattoo flash drawn from Don Ed Hardy's art: tigers, dragons, skulls, roses, eagles and koi, rendered in high-contrast color across tees, hoodies and caps. If you want the quintessential Ed Hardy piece, reach for a graphic that wears that bold tattoo imagery front and center.

Has Ed Hardy collaborated with other brands?+

Yes, especially during its European relaunch. After successfully returning in Europe in 2018, the brand presented collaborations with names including Missguided and Illustrated People, the latter sold through retailers like Selfridges, ASOS and Topshop, and followed with a 2019 collaboration with Rose In Good Faith.

Where can I buy authentic Ed Hardy?+

Stick to the brand's own channels and established retailers that have carried it, which during the relaunch era included the likes of Selfridges and ASOS. Because the label has been so heavily licensed and so widely counterfeited, buying from a trusted seller is the simplest way to be sure the artwork and quality are the real thing.
