Éric Bompard is a French cashmere house, established in 1984 by entrepreneur and former computer technician Éric Bompard after a trip to Asia where he discovered cashmere weaving.

The label has stayed close to its founding obsession: fine cashmere knitwear. Bompard began passing the business to his daughter, Lorraine de Gournay, from 2004, and in 2018 the company was acquired by Xavier Marie — the founder of Maisons du Monde — together with Apax Partners and BPI France, with Barbara Werschine named CEO in March 2020.

Eric Bompard shopping FAQ

Is Éric Bompard cashmere worth it?+

For people who buy cashmere often, Éric Bompard tends to land in the sweet spot. Reviewers describe the knits as soft, slow to pill and good at holding their shape through repeated washes, with quality closer to the high end but at more reasonable prices than many specialists. As with any cashmere, individual experiences vary, but the brand has a loyal following for everyday luxury knitwear.

Why does Éric Bompard cashmere cost more than budget cashmere?+

Because it sits a tier above mass-market cashmere on softness and finish. Shoppers comparing it with cheaper options generally find Bompard noticeably softer and more durable, with lighter pilling over time, which is what you pay the premium for. The brand is built entirely around cashmere as a high-fashion material, so the focus is on the yarn and the make rather than breadth of product.

What should I buy from Éric Bompard first?+

A classic crewneck or V-neck cashmere sweater is the natural starting point, since knitwear is the entire reason the house exists. Bompard is a French cashmere specialist, so a simple, well-fitted pullover in a wearable colour gives you the clearest sense of the quality before you build out the wardrobe.

When and where was Éric Bompard founded?+

Éric Bompard SA is a French high-fashion cashmere goods manufacturer established in 1984. It was created by Éric Bompard, an entrepreneur and former computer technician, following a trip to Asia where he learned about cashmere weaving.

What is Éric Bompard known for making?+

Cashmere knitwear, full stop. The house is a French cashmere wool goods manufacturer, and that single-material focus is its identity. The appeal is a specialist who does one fibre very well rather than a general fashion label that happens to sell jumpers.

Who runs Éric Bompard now?+

Leadership has changed hands a few times. Founder Éric Bompard began passing the company to his daughter, Lorraine de Gournay, from 2004, and she went on to become CEO. In 2018 the brand was acquired by Xavier Marie, founder of Maisons du Monde, together with Apax Partners and BPI France, and in March 2020 Barbara Werschine was announced as CEO.

What is the "Cachemire Family" all about?+

It was the centrepiece of the brand's late-2019 advertising. After the 2018 acquisition, Éric Bompard launched a campaign promoting its image through a "Cachemire Family," leaning into the idea of cashmere as a warm, family-style staple rather than a one-off luxury splurge.

How do I keep Éric Bompard cashmere from pilling?+

Cashmere pills most where there's friction, so a little care goes a long way. Owners report the knits pill lightly and wash well when treated gently, so cool hand-washing or a delicate machine cycle, flat drying and resting a sweater between wears all help. A cashmere comb tidies up any pilling that does appear, especially under the arms and at the cuffs.

How does Éric Bompard compare with UK cashmere specialists?+

It holds its own. Buyers who have shopped across the UK cashmere specialists often place Bompard's overall quality closer to the high end while finding its prices more reasonable, which is why it has a reputation as a value pick within premium cashmere. Think of it as the Parisian entry into the everyday-luxury knit category.

Will an Éric Bompard sweater fit me, and how do I choose a size?+

Sizing is easier here than with many knitwear brands because Bompard publishes detailed information about each garment. Reviewers specifically call out that the brand posts the actual measurements of its pieces, so you can match the chest and length to a sweater you already own rather than guessing from a size label.
