The Lauders started in 1946 with just four products and won their first department-store account at Saks Fifth Avenue in 1948. The men's line Aramis followed in 1964 and the dermatologist-guided brand Clinique in 1968, before the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 1995.
Through the 1990s it transformed from family business into a publicly traded, family-controlled group, acquiring MAC Cosmetics, Bobbi Brown and La Mer, and later Jo Malone London and Le Labo. Leonard A. Lauder served as chairman emeritus and William P. Lauder chairs the board.
