Fleur du Mal was founded in 2012 by Jennifer Zuccarini, who grew up in Toronto, Canada, before moving to New York. She studied Fine Arts in Montreal and completed a degree in Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and she has cited her parents as her inspiration for entering fashion.

Zuccarini took the name from Les Fleurs du mal ("the flowers of evil"), the collection of poems by Charles Baudelaire. She felt Baudelaire suited the brand as a "decadent and tormented artist, a true dandy, who spent everything he had on clothing, opium, and women," which sets the provocative, dandyish tone of the label.

Zuccarini's goal was to change how people think about lingerie, arguing it plays an important role in a woman's wardrobe and should not be limited to special events such as a date. That everyday-luxury philosophy is the throughline behind the brand's pieces, which are designed to be worn regularly rather than saved for occasions.

Beyond lingerie, Fleur du Mal launched a ready-to-wear label in 2017 and, as of 2019, also offers women's ready-to-wear fashion and swims. Its special collections have included "ESSENTIELS", "SPRING", "RESORT", "BRIDAL" and "BACK IN STOCK", so the brand spans a fuller boudoir-to-daywear wardrobe.

Between 2017 and 2019, Fleur du Mal opened boutiques in SoHo, New York City, and in Los Angeles, California. In August 2025 it expanded into its second New York City location with a boutique in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The brand has also long used mobile pop-up shops, launching its first in New York in November 2012.

Fleur du Mal partnered with Playboy in 2015 on a 17-piece collaboration spanning bra and panty sets, bodysuits, robes and bunny ears in various colors, prints and fabrics. In November 2017 it also collaborated with the perfume brand Kilian, using microcapsules to bring fragrance to underwear pieces, including a semi-transparent bodysuit and a camisole-and-shorts night set.

In 2017, the same year it launched ready-to-wear, the Observer described Fleur du Mal as Hollywood's go-to lingerie line. In 2019, The Independent named it one of the "65 best online clothing stores in the US," signaling its standing as a respected contemporary intimates brand.
