Houlihan Cargo Pant
A skinny cargo so successful it escaped novelty status and became the brand's legend.
Story & heritage
Wikipedia calls the Houlihan Cargo Pant J Brand's most famous skinny, noting that it was named after Hot Lips Houlihan from M*A*S*H. What started as a novelty idea turned into a major commercial hit: Bloomingdale's vice chairman Frank Doroff called it the store's best-selling pant, and the brand reportedly sold more than 300,000 pairs.
A 2010 Teen Vogue celebrity-sighting item already treated the Houlihan as an instantly recognisable piece, which shows how quickly the style crossed from denim niche into broader pop-fashion awareness.
Materials & craft
The Houlihan translates cargo-pant utility into J Brand's close-fitting denim language: a skinny silhouette, flap cargo pockets, and zip details at the lower leg on many versions.
How to choose & style
The magic is the tension between utility and polish. Wear it like a jean with boots and a knit, or lean into the military undertone with a tee and flat sneakers. The muted khaki and olive washes are the most convincing.
