Born in Gibraltar in 1960 and raised in South London, Galliano graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1984 with a first; his French Revolution-inspired graduate collection 'Les Incroyables' was bought in full by the boutique Browns. He launched his own label, moved to Paris in 1989, and in 1995 became the first British designer to head a French haute couture house at Givenchy.
In 1996 LVMH moved him to Christian Dior, where he won wide acclaim and created icons like the Saddle bag. He was named British Designer of the Year in 1987, 1994, 1995 and 1997 and made a CBE in 2001. From 2014 to 2024 he served as creative director of Maison Margiela, and in 2026 announced a two-year creative partnership with Zara.
