Joseph stores championed emerging talent — Margaret Howell, Katharine Hamnett, John Galliano and Azzedine Alaïa among them — while the house built its own name on distinctive knitwear (Joseph Tricot) and was among the first to put a restaurant and shop under one roof, with Joe's at the Norman Foster–designed Sloane Street flagship opened in 1979. It won British Fashion Awards for Knitwear Designer of the Year four times between 1990 and 1994.
In 1999 the Ettedgui brothers sold a majority share to Belgian financier Albert Frère with a minority interest to LVMH, and in 2005 the company passed to Japan's Onward Kashiyama. In 2016 Joseph opened its first standalone menswear store at No.2 Savile Row.
