kiton
Re-checked daily
Founded in Arzano, near Naples, in 1968 by Ciro Paone, Kiton is an Italian house rooted in traditional Neapolitan tailoring — its slogan, 'il meglio del meglio più uno', the best of the best plus one.

The name derives from the chiton, the ceremonial tunic of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Kiton's craft is hand-cut and hand-basted, and the house keeps an integrated supply chain across five company-owned factories — primary production in Arzano, plus sites for outerwear, knitwear, jeans and textiles. In 2009 it bought the Carlo Barbera woollen mill in Biella, founded in 1949, to spin its own delicate yarns and weaves.

Womenswear arrived in 1995, an eyewear line in 2015, and the KNT athleisure line in 2018 under the third generation of the family. The company runs a School of Advanced Tailoring, founded in 2000, to train new generations of tailors. By the end of 2022 it had more than 60 monobrand stores and 300 wholesale accounts worldwide. Founder Ciro Paone died in 2021; his nephew Antonio de Matteis serves as CEO.

kiton shopping FAQ

Why is Kiton so expensive?+

It comes down to hand-work and materials. Kiton operates in the luxury sector with hand-cut and hand-basted tailoring, so a single suit absorbs an enormous number of skilled labour hours from Neapolitan artisans. On top of that, the house uses some of the rarest cloth in the world, and it owns the Carlo Barbera mill that produces much of it. You are paying for a garment built largely by hand from exceptional fabric.

Is a Kiton suit actually worth it?+

If your benchmark is the very top of tailoring, the consensus among enthusiasts is yes. The brand's own slogan, Il meglio del meglio più uno, the best of the best plus one, captures the ambition, and the hand construction gives each piece a uniqueness a machine-made suit cannot match. It is not value in any everyday sense, but at the bespoke summit it is regarded as the real thing rather than a markup.

How does Kiton compare to Brioni?+

They sit at comparable heights, with differences more of character than rank. Kiton is rooted in traditional Neapolitan tailoring and is associated with rare luxury fibres, while Brioni is known for a softer, cleaner Roman silhouette. Both are revered houses of Italian tailoring; the choice usually comes down to which cut and house style speaks to you rather than one being plainly better.

What does the name Kiton mean?+

The name derives from the chiton, the ceremonial tunic worn by the ancient Greeks and Romans. It is a fitting choice for a tailoring house, rooting a modern Neapolitan label in a classical idea of garment-making. The word ultimately traces back through Ancient Greek to a Semitic root meaning flax or linen.

What is Kiton best known for?+

Above all, its hand-made Neapolitan tailoring: hand-cut and hand-basted suits and jackets that define the house. Kiton offers a bespoke service alongside ready-to-wear menswear and womenswear. The brand's reputation rests on doing traditional Italian tailoring at the absolute highest level.

Where are Kiton garments made?+

Everything is made in Italy across five company-owned facilities. Primary production, including coats, jackets, shirts, ties, shoes and small leather goods, happens at the headquarters in Arzano, near Naples, with knitwear from Fidenza and fabrics developed at Biella. Owning the whole chain, right down to the Carlo Barbera mill, lets Kiton control quality end to end.

When and where was Kiton founded?+

Kiton was founded in 1968 by Ciro Paone in Arzano, in the province of Naples, as the trademark brand of his company Ciro Paone SpA, which dated back to 1956. Its roots are firmly in traditional Italian, and specifically Neapolitan, tailoring. By the end of 2022 it had grown to more than 60 monobrand stores and 300 wholesale accounts worldwide.

Who owns and runs Kiton now?+

Kiton is still led by the founding family. Antonio de Matteis, the nephew of Ciro Paone, is CEO and joint creative director of menswear, having been appointed CEO in 2007. Maria Giovanna Paone, the founder's daughter, serves as president and creative director of womenswear. Founder Ciro Paone died in Naples in 2021.

Does Kiton make womenswear?+

Yes. Kiton launched a line of womenswear in 1995, developed under Maria Giovanna Paone, the founder's daughter, who joined the company in 1986. The women's collection emphasises tailored jackets and has expanded into accessories, and Paone is a noted advocate of slow fashion. By 2013 womenswear accounted for a fifth of the company's growth.

What is KNT by Kiton?+

KNT, short for Kiton New Texture, is an athleisure collection launched in 2018. It is owned by twins Walter and Mariano de Matteis, the latest generation of the Kiton family, and represents the house stretching its tailoring sensibility into more casual territory. It is a sign of the brand evolving while staying in family hands.

How does Kiton keep its hand-tailoring tradition alive?+

Through its School of Advanced Tailoring, founded in 2000 to train new generations of tailors. The three-year programme takes students aged roughly 16 to 21, mostly from the Naples area, and focuses heavily on jacket-making, with in-house instructors. Around 80% of graduates go on to work at Kiton or other companies, which is how the house safeguards the skills behind its suits.

Has Kiton dressed any notable people or teams?+

Yes. In July 2023 Kiton began dressing the team and players of the London football club Tottenham Hotspur for official events. The house also has a notable historical link to fine tailoring: in 2008 founder Ciro Paone acquired items that once belonged to Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor, and later displayed them during Pitti Uomo in Florence.
