Until Marina Rinaldi, no fashion group had focused on the needs of curvaceous women. From its first 1981 campaigns, developed with Emanuele Pirella, the brand was the first to introduce the Italian expression taglia comoda — 'plus-size,' literally 'comfortable size' — replacing the older taglia forte. Its campaigns have been shot by Arthur Elgort, Peter Lindbergh, Patrick Demarchelier and Craig McDean, with faces including India Hicks and, more recently, Ashley Graham and Precious Lee.
Available internationally since 1984, Marina Rinaldi now has more than 300 stores worldwide, in shopping districts from Madison Avenue in New York to Old Bond Street in London and Corso Vittorio Emanuele in Milan. In 1991 its house magazine, MR Characters, became the first Italian magazine dedicated entirely to curvaceous women.
