The American clothing brand was created in 1975 by menswear entrepreneur Herb Goldsmith and first introduced to domestic American markets in 1980 by Europe Craft Imports, becoming a defining piece of 1980s style. Its advertising tagline was "when you put it on, something happens," and the brand was notable for shifting from celebrity endorsements toward public service announcements on issues like anti-drugs and pro-voting.
The brand was licensed in 2016 by Sammy Catton, President of iApparel Brands, and is currently owned by Ron Malhotra. In recent years it has broadened well beyond the original jacket into a women's line, footwear, sportswear, hosiery and even a medical scrubs line, carried at retailers including Urban Outfitters.
