PANGAIA

A fashion company that runs like a lab — athleisure and graphic tees grown from sustainable materials.

PANGAIA
Re-checked daily
Founded in 2018, Pangaia is a fashion and materials science company — selling athleisure, wardrobe basics and graphic T-shirts while running research on sustainable materials out of Florence, Italy.

The brand grew out of Future Tech Lab, a material-innovation incubator founded by Miroslava Duma, and rose to prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic with backing from figures including Will Smith, Jaden Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio. In 2021 it acquired the Italian technical-textile pioneers Grado Zero and built an R&D subsidiary in Florence around FLWRDWN, a patented vegan thermal insulation made from wildflowers and biopolymers.

In January 2025 the Abu Dhabi-based Royal Group acquired a controlling stake, and that year former Inditex director Daniel Gómez Rojas was named CEO. In 2024 Pangaia opened its first UK flagship at 57 Carnaby Street, London — part retail space, part educational hub.

PANGAIA shopping FAQ

Is Pangaia worth it, and why is it so expensive?+

Pangaia prices reflect what it actually is: a materials science company as much as a fashion label, so a chunk of the cost goes into developing and sourcing innovative sustainable fibres rather than just the garment itself. If experimental, lower-impact materials genuinely matter to you, the premium is easier to justify; if you only want a basic hoodie, you can find cheaper. It's a buy for people who want to wear the research.

What is Pangaia actually known for?+

Pangaia sells athleisure, wardrobe materials and graphic T-shirts, and it's best known for treating clothing as a vehicle for material innovation. The brand operates globally while doing its sustainable-materials research and development in Florence, Italy. So the famous tracksuits and tees are really showcases for the science underneath.

What is FLWRDWN, the wildflower down in Pangaia pieces?+

FLWRDWN is a patented vegan thermal insulation made from wildflowers, biopolymers and a cellulose-based aerogel, used as an alternative to traditional down. It was originally developed by Grado Zero Innovation and became central to Pangaia's bio-material portfolio after the IP came across to the company. It's a flagship example of the brand turning lab work into something you can actually wear.

When was Pangaia founded, and where did it come from?+

Pangaia was founded in 2018 and grew out of Future Tech Lab, a material-innovation incubator founded by Miroslava Duma. Duma started as a fashion influencer before moving into venture capital and backing sustainability and materials-science ventures. So unlike most fashion houses, Pangaia's roots are in a tech incubator rather than a design studio.

How did Pangaia become so popular so quickly?+

The brand rose to prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic, helped by high-profile supporters including Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Carmen Busquets and Leonardo DiCaprio. That mix of comfortable athleisure and a sustainability story landed perfectly at a moment when everyone was at home and thinking harder about consumption. The celebrity backing turned a science project into a cult name.

Why is Florence so important to Pangaia?+

Florence, Italy is where Pangaia carries out its materials research and development. In 2021 the company acquired the business branches of Italian technical-textile pioneers Grado Zero Espace and Grado Zero Innovation and set up an R&D subsidiary there. That Italian lab is the engine room behind the brand's signature fibres.

Who owns Pangaia now, and who runs it?+

In January 2025, the Abu Dhabi-based Royal Group acquired a controlling stake to support Pangaia's global expansion and innovation. Later in 2025 the company named former Inditex director Daniel Gómez Rojas as its CEO. So there's serious capital and retail experience now sitting behind the science.

Has Pangaia collaborated with other brands and artists?+

Plenty. Pangaia has worked with names spanning fashion, art and innovation, including Timberland, Takashi Murakami, Alexander Wang, Ambush, The Woolmark Company and Kenny Scharf, among others. These tie-ups help it reach beyond the sustainability niche while keeping the material story front and centre.

Is Pangaia genuinely sustainable, or is it marketing?+

Pangaia is built explicitly around materials science and lower-impact innovation like its FLWRDWN insulation, and its R&D investment is real. That said, as with any brand making bold green claims, it's worth reading the specifics on each product rather than taking a blanket promise at face value. Treat it as a serious, science-led effort, and still shop with your eyes open.

Where can I buy Pangaia in person?+

In 2024, Pangaia opened its first UK flagship at 57 Carnaby Street, Soho, London, a roughly 1,500 sq ft space that doubles as a retail store and an educational hub. Beyond that the brand sells globally online. Visiting the flagship is a nice way to actually handle the materials before you commit.
