Born in Singapore to Nepali parents and raised in Kathmandu, Gurung trained at Parsons School of Design and cut his teeth with Donna Karan, Cynthia Rowley and five years at Bill Blass before going out on his own. His gowns have been worn by Michelle Obama, Kamala Harris, the Duchess of Cambridge, Oprah Winfrey and Sarah Jessica Parker.
His work draws from a roaming set of cultural references, and the recognition followed: the CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear in 2011, a turn as vice chairman of the CFDA, and creative director of Japanese jewelry house Tasaki since 2017.
