Comey arrived at fashion sideways. Born outside Hartford, Connecticut, she studied Asian studies, printmaking and sculpture at the University of Vermont, graduating in 1994, then moved to New York in 1997 and worked at Theory while making costumes for Gogol Bordello. A commission to hand-paint two shirts for David Bowie — at $100 each — got her noticed, and a freelance career began.
She presented her first menswear collection in September 2001 and expanded into womenswear in 2004; Vogue praised that early ready-to-wear as 'confident, easy clothes for cool customers with discerning eyes.' She was inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2009, and her clothes have been worn by Miranda July, Rashida Jones and Lady Gaga.
