Founded in London in 1998 by entrepreneur Lowell Harder, Radley London is a British accessories brand built on the idea that a handbag need not be black or navy.

Australian-born Harder began in 1984 on a weekend stall at Camden Market, selling for Indian accessories brand Hidesign, before backing from the Tula Group let her develop a women's line of her own. The brand officially launched in 1998 and found early traction through a distribution partnership with John Lewis, motivated by Harder's wish for more vibrant, colourful alternatives to a conservative market.

Positioned in accessible luxury, Radley now makes handbags, small leather goods, luggage and footwear, and licenses its name across eyewear, jewellery, watches and beauty. The house has changed hands among private-equity owners — Phoenix in 2006, Exponent in 2007, and Bregal Freshstream since 2016 — and counts collaborations with Harris Tweed, Holly Fulton and the V&A.

Radley shopping FAQ

Are Radley London handbags worth it?+

Radley sits in the accessible-luxury space, offering real leather bags at a price point well below traditional designer houses. For buyers who want quiet, well-made everyday handbags without a four-figure outlay, it is a sensible sweet spot. Think of it as dependable craftsmanship and colour rather than status-symbol luxury.

What is the Radley Scottie dog logo?+

The little Scottie dog is Radley's signature mascot and has appeared on its designs since the brand's earliest days. It functions as the brand's quiet calling card on handbags, purses and accessories. Spotting the Scottie is the fastest way to recognise a Radley piece.

Who founded Radley and when?+

Radley was founded by the Australian-born businesswoman Lowell Harder, with the brand created in 1997 and officially launching in 1998. Harder had entered the accessories trade back in 1984 running a weekend stall at London's Camden Market. Radley grew out of that hands-on market beginning.

Why was Radley created?+

According to an interview in Drapers trade magazine, Harder was frustrated by how many handbags came only in conservative colours like black and navy. She set out to make more vibrant, colourful alternatives to what the market offered. That appetite for colour is still part of Radley's identity.

Is Radley a British brand?+

Yes, Radley London is a British accessories brand that designs and retails leather handbags, purses, footwear and related accessories. It is positioned in the accessible-luxury market and is strongly associated with London. The 'London' in the name is core to how it presents itself.

What does Radley actually make?+

Radley's core is leather handbags and small leather goods, but its range extends to luggage, hats, scarves, gloves, casual footwear, watches, gifts and stationery. It also licenses its name for eyewear, jewellery, watches and beauty products. So you can build a fairly complete accessories wardrobe within one brand.

Where can I buy Radley?+

In the UK, Radley is sold through major retailers including John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, Next and QVC, plus its own stores in London's Covent Garden and Glasgow's Buchanan Galleries. Internationally it reaches the US through department stores such as Macy's, Nordstrom and Dillard's, and Australia via Myer. That wide stockist network makes it easy to find in person.

Who owns Radley now?+

Radley has passed through several private-equity owners: Phoenix Equity Partners took a majority stake in 2006, Exponent Private Equity acquired it in 2007, and Bregal Freshstream acquired it in 2016. The brand's design direction is currently led by Spanish designer Fernando Soriano Iglesias, who became Design Director as of August 2024. Ownership has changed hands while the Scottie-dog identity stayed put.

Has Radley done notable collaborations?+

Yes, Radley partnered with Harris Tweed in 2010 and again in 2013 to bring the Scottish textile into its handbags, and collaborated with Scottish designer Holly Fulton in 2013 on a capsule of accessories. It has also worked with cultural institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum. These tie-ups show its appetite for craft and heritage references.

Radley or Cath Kidston for a colourful British bag?+

Both are British and lean playful, but Radley's focus is leather handbags positioned as accessible luxury, with the recognisable Scottie-dog signature. The two have even collaborated on a floral tote, so they are complementary rather than strictly rivals. Choose Radley if you specifically want a leather-led, accessory-focused brand.

Does Radley have a quiet-luxury appeal?+

Radley's combination of real leather, restrained branding and an accessible price point gives it an understated, everyday-luxury feel rather than a loud logo identity. The Scottie dog is more of an in-the-know detail than a status badge. That makes it a comfortable pick if you prefer your bags polished but low-key.
