Rapha
Re-checked daily
Rapha is a cycling lifestyle brand focused on road racing and mountain biking — clothing and accessories made for the ride and the culture around it.

The company was started in London in early 2004 by Simon Mottram and Luke Scheybeler, taking its name from the 1960s cycling team Rapha — itself named after the apéritif maker Saint-Raphaël. Collaborations have run through its history, from a 2007 range with Paul Smith to bikepacking work with Apidura, and in 2015 it founded the Rapha Cycling Club, which today has over 20,000 members and about 21 international stores it calls "clubhouses."

In August 2017, RZC Investments — set up by Steuart Walton — agreed to buy Rapha for £200m. The brand has clothed pro teams including Team Sky and EF Education–EasyPost, moved its North American base to Bentonville, Arkansas, in 2020, and entered the mountain bike market in 2021.

Rapha shopping FAQ

Is Rapha cycling kit worth the money?+

It depends on how you ride. Rapha is a road-cycling lifestyle brand built around fit, fabric, and a strong aesthetic, and committed road and mountain riders tend to feel the premium pays off in comfort on long days. If you ride occasionally, the value case is softer, and plenty of cyclists wait for the right moment to buy in.

Why is Rapha so expensive?+

Rapha positioned itself as a premium roadwear brand from the start in 2004, leaning on technical fabrics, considered design, and high-profile collaborations. You're paying for that performance-and-lifestyle blend rather than a bare-bones jersey. Whether that's justified comes down to how much you value the fit and the brand world around it.

How does Rapha compare to other cycling brands?+

Rapha tends to be grouped with the premium end of the market alongside names like Castelli and Assos, and it's especially associated with road cycling style and its clubhouse-and-club ecosystem. Rivals may undercut it on price, but Rapha's pull is as much about the community and aesthetic as the kit. Try the fit before committing, since cuts vary by brand.

What is the Rapha Cycling Club (RCC)?+

The Rapha Cycling Club, launched in 2015, is the brand's international membership club, and members get benefits with the company. It has grown to over 20,000 members and is a big part of what makes Rapha more than just a clothing label. For social riders, the club is often the real draw.

Where does the name Rapha come from?+

It's borrowed from cycling history. The name was taken from the 1960s cycling team Rapha, which was itself named after the apéritif drink company Saint-Raphaël. That heritage nod fits a brand built squarely around road racing culture.

Who founded Rapha and when?+

Rapha was started in London in early 2004 by Simon Mottram and Luke Scheybeler, with its first products launching in July that year. The company is still headquartered in London and now also runs a United States office in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Who owns Rapha now?+

Rapha is owned by RZC Investments, a company set up by Steuart Walton, which announced it would buy the brand for £200m in August 2017. Walton family ties also help explain the 2020 move of Rapha's North American headquarters to Bentonville, Arkansas.

Has Rapha collaborated with fashion designers?+

Yes, and the collaborations are part of its appeal. In 2007 Rapha partnered with British designer Paul Smith on a range of cycle clothing and accessories, and in 2020 it teamed with Palace Skateboards on a cycling kit for the EF Education–EasyPost team at the Giro d'Italia. These tie-ups are central to its design-led reputation.

Does Rapha make mountain bike clothing too?+

It does now. Rapha entered the mountain bike market in 2021, launching its first range of MTB clothing alongside a line of helmets made in collaboration with Smith. So while road cycling is its core, off-road riders have a Rapha option as well.

Which pro cycling teams has Rapha sponsored?+

Rapha's racing pedigree is well established. It produced the kit for Team Sky from 2013 through the 2016 season, and EF Education First began wearing Rapha in 2019 alongside the EF Education–EasyPost WorldTour team. That pro presence is a big reason riders trust the performance side of the brand.
