Clergerie began in 1970 working for Charles Jourdan, then in 1978 bought the Joseph Fenestrier shoe factory in Romans-sur-Isère and started making shoes under his own name there. Roland Mouret took over as creative director at La Maison Robert Clergerie in 2011. In its prime the house ran some twenty-one stores worldwide.
The recent years have been turbulent: Clergerie Paris entered receivership in 2023 and was sold to Titan Industries, faced receivership again in 2024, was placed into liquidation in April 2025, and was acquired anew that May by Petrel 92 SL.
