Raised in Los Angeles, Piccone trained at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, graduating with honors. Her first job was with Cole of California; after a stint in New York designing for Bobbie Brooks, she licensed a line of swimsuits for Body Glove in 1985 and that same year, at 24, started her own company in a Venice garage. Her debut suits became instant icons of '80s style, widely imitated and landing her on magazine covers.
In 1989 she was named California Designer of the Year. She launched her namesake collection in 1990 and continues it to this day, and in 1994 entered a licensing deal to design Guess?'s first swimwear in six years. Her neoprene suits sit in the permanent collection of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
