Story & heritage
Shanghai Tang was founded in 1994 by David Tang and built its fashion language around a contemporary reading of Chinese dress. The brand's own Definitive Icons edit names the Tang Qipao beside the Tang Jacket and Five-Button Jacket, while its public history describes a design concept inspired by 1920s cheongsam brought into the 21st century.
The Tang Qipao keeps the instantly legible codes of the form: mandarin collar, short sleeves or cap sleeves, and a side-button fastening. Current retail examples are offered in silk jacquard, floral jacquard and rose-print cotton, making the silhouette less a single dress than a recurring house canvas.
Materials & craft
Retail descriptions for recent Tang Qipaos call out mulberry silk, silk jacquard, floral-jacquard print, mandarin collars and side button fastenings. The construction depends on clean body lines and placement of the closure; pattern and fabric do the expressive work.
How to choose & style
Choose the jacquard versions when the qipao is the whole outfit: a low heel and small clutch keep the line uninterrupted. Printed cotton or lighter jacquards read more daytime, especially under a short jacket.
