Before jewellery, Buhai co-founded the womenswear label Vena Cava in 2003 with a $5,000 loan, just out of Parsons; the line developed a cult following in the independent New York scene, was carried by 120 stores and earned a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund runner-up nod in 2008. From 2015 to 2017 she also designed jewellery collections for the French house Lemaire.
Her pieces are handmade by artisans in Los Angeles, in recycled sterling silver and made primarily to order, and are stocked by retailers including Net-A-Porter, Dover Street Market, SSENSE and Mytheresa — as well as institutions like the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
