Story & heritage
Starter began in New Haven in 1971, then moved into licensed professional sports apparel in the late 1970s; its first retail breakthrough was a line of team jackets. The Classic Breakaway Jacket is the modern official-store descendant of the breakaway pullover Wikipedia describes as closely related to the coach’s parka.
The silhouette keeps the early-Starter formula direct: bold league color-blocking, a hooded pullover body, a large team mark, and visible Starter branding at the cuff or hood.
Materials & craft
Official product copy for the current Jets version lists a crinkled 100% nylon oxford shell, a snap placket with quarter-zip closure, a kangaroo-style front pocket with hidden zip closure, adjustable hood, elastic cuffs and hem, and side zip vents.
Twill-appliquéd team marks and embroidered Starter logos keep the jacket in the language that made the S-and-star logo part of the design rather than an afterthought.
How to choose & style
Size it like outerwear, not a sweatshirt: it looks best with room through the body, straight denim or track pants, and a simple tee so the color-blocking leads.
Choose a team color you actually wear often; the Breakaway is meant to be the loud layer.
