Thomas Pink

Jermyn-Street spirit, three Irish brothers, and a name borrowed from a Mayfair tailor.

Thomas Pink
Re-checked daily
A British clothing company selling men's shirts and menswear, Thomas Pink was established in London in 1984 by three Irish brothers — and named for an eighteenth-century Mayfair tailor.

Founded by James, Peter and John Mullen, the company built its reputation on shirting before catching the eye of luxury's biggest group. In 1999 it was sold to LVMH, which paid about €48 million for 70% — at the time the company had 20 shops, mostly in the UK — and acquired the rest in 2003.

Thomas Pink famously fought and won a 2014 UK trademark case against Victoria's Secret over the "Pink" label. It later changed its name, and after a long LVMH ownership ending in 2021, the brand was acquired in 2024 by Icon Luxury Group and CP Brands Group.

Thomas Pink shopping FAQ

Are Thomas Pink shirts worth it?+

Opinions split here. Shoppers often note that Thomas Pink shirts cost noticeably more than rivals while sitting in a similar quality bracket, which leads many to call them worth it mainly at sale rather than full retail. The flip side is the Jermyn Street name and some genuinely good fabrics, so if you value the heritage and styling, the premium can make sense. Decide whether you are buying the shirt or the label.

How does Thomas Pink compare to Charles Tyrwhitt?+

This is the comparison shoppers reach for most, since both trade on the Jermyn Street shirtmaking tradition. The common view is that build quality is broadly similar, with Charles Tyrwhitt offering better value because Thomas Pink typically prices higher. Thomas Pink's draw is its fabrics and brand cachet rather than a clear quality lead. Both also sit near peers like Hawes & Curtis and Turnbull & Asser.

Is Thomas Pink considered good quality?+

It is a respected British shirtmaker, though enthusiasts debate whether its quality justifies the price next to high-street rivals. The brand's strength has long been its shirting and the Jermyn Street tailoring tradition it draws on. For a dependable dress shirt with British heritage it holds up; for outright value, comparison shopping pays off.

What is Thomas Pink known for?+

Thomas Pink is a British clothing company best known for men's shirts, alongside other menswear and accessories. Shirts are the heart of the house and the reason most people seek the brand out. The rest of the range builds around that core.

Where does the name Thomas Pink come from?+

The brand is named after Thomas Pink, an eighteenth-century tailor in Mayfair, London, so the name nods to British tailoring heritage rather than the founders themselves. That historical reference is woven into the brand's identity. It is a piece of trivia worth knowing before you wear one.

Who founded Thomas Pink and when?+

The company was established in London in 1984 by three Irish brothers, James, Peter and John Mullen. So despite the very English name, its founders were Irish. The label has stayed a London shirtmaker at heart since then.

Was Thomas Pink owned by LVMH?+

Yes. French luxury conglomerate LVMH bought about seventy percent of the company in 1999 for roughly €48 million, when it had twenty shops, and acquired the remaining thirty percent in 2003. LVMH owned the brand from 1999 until 2021, a significant chapter in its history.

Why is Thomas Pink now sometimes called Pink?+

In November 2018 the company changed its name to Pink Shirtmaker, shortly before a difficult period. The brand had also fought a notable trademark case, winning a 2014 UK High Court ruling against Victoria's Secret over its use of the label "Pink." So the shorter name and the trademark fight are linked parts of its recent story.

Did Thomas Pink close down?+

It came very close. The brand closed its Jermyn Street shop in August 2020 and then shut its remaining shops, website and social media in December that year, a collapse partly attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was not the end, however.

Is Thomas Pink still trading today?+

Yes. In February 2021, former JD Sports executive Nick Preston arranged to acquire the brand and its intellectual property from LVMH, and it resumed trading that November. In December 2024 it was acquired by Icon Luxury Group and CP Brands in a joint venture. So the shirtmaker lives on under new ownership.
