Tumi makes high-end suitcases and bags for travel, known for their black-on-black ballistic nylon — and named after a Peruvian tumi ceremonial knife.

Founded in 1975 by Charlie Clifford after a stint in the Peace Corps in Peru, the company is based in Edison, New Jersey. Beyond luggage it supplies belts, pens and electronic accessories, and has collaborated with figures and brands from designer Anish Kapoor to Ducati and McLaren Racing. A signature touch is the metal plate with a unique 20-digit registration number in each bag, tied to its Tumi Tracer recovery program.

London private-equity firm Doughty Hanson & Co took over Tumi for $276 million in 2004, and the company made an initial public offering in 2012 as Tumi Holdings, Inc. In March 2016, Samsonite announced it would acquire Tumi in an all-cash transaction worth $1.8 billion. In July 2025, Tumi opened its first flagship store in China.

Tumi shopping FAQ

Is Tumi luggage worth the price?+

It depends how hard you travel. Tumi is premium luggage built around tough ballistic nylon and meticulous construction, and frequent flyers routinely report bags lasting a decade or more of heavy use. If you fly weekly or are rough on your gear, the durability pays back; for a couple of trips a year you can often find better value elsewhere.

Why is Tumi luggage so expensive?+

The price reflects materials and engineering. Tumi's signature black-on-black ballistic nylon is highly abrasion- and tear-resistant, and the brand has long positioned itself at the luxury end of the luggage market. You're paying for hardware, stitching and detailing built to survive years of airport abuse, plus the brand's premium standing.

Tumi vs Rimowa vs Briggs & Riley, which should I buy?+

All three are top-tier, with different strengths. Tumi is known for sleek, business-traveller styling in durable ballistic nylon; Rimowa for its iconic, lightweight aluminium shells; and Briggs & Riley for organisation and a famously generous lifetime warranty. If you want a polished soft-side bag that reads professional, Tumi is the natural pick; choose by whether you value looks, lightness or warranty most.

What is the Tumi Tracer program?+

Tumi Tracer is the brand's lost-and-found system. Tumi puts a metal plate with a unique 20-digit registration number in each of its bags; you register that number to enter your contact details into a central database, so you can be reunited with your bag if it's found and reported. It's one of the brand's most distinctive ownership perks.

Which Tumi piece should I buy first?+

For most travellers the entry point is a carry-on in Tumi's classic ballistic nylon, the material the brand is most known for, since it survives constant overhead-bin abuse. Whatever you choose, register the bag in the Tumi Tracer program straight away so it's protected from day one.

What is Tumi known for making?+

Tumi is a maker of high-end suitcases and bags for travel, based in Edison, New Jersey. Beyond luggage it also supplies accessories such as belts, pens and electronic equipment, but its reputation rests on durable, business-ready travel pieces in its signature ballistic nylon.

What does the name Tumi mean, and who founded it?+

Tumi was founded in 1975 by Charlie Clifford, after a stint in the Peace Corps in Peru. The brand is named after the tumi, a Peruvian ceremonial knife once used for sacrifices, a nod to Clifford's time in the country.

Who owns Tumi now?+

Tumi is owned by Samsonite, which announced in March 2016 that it would acquire the brand in an all-cash transaction worth $1.8 billion. Tumi had gone public on the NYSE in 2012 under Tumi Holdings, Inc. before that acquisition.

What is Tumi's warranty?+

Tumi was historically famous for a lifetime warranty. After Doughty Hanson & Co took the company over in 2004, the standard warranty changed to 5 years. Beyond those five years, though, the brand still offers customers a lifetime service and repair program, with possible assessed fees and costs.

Where can I buy Tumi?+

Tumi is sold at select department stores and specialty stores, plus its own large network of more than 120 Tumi stores and around 200 shops worldwide, alongside its official website. The brand continues to expand, opening its first flagship store in China in July 2025.

Does Tumi work with any other brands?+

Yes, Tumi has a history of high-profile partnerships. In November 2019 McLaren named Tumi its official luggage partner for McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive. Earlier collaborations included a 2006 co-branded collection with Italian motorcycle maker Ducati and a solar-charging PowerPack Backpack developed with designer Anish Kapoor.

How should I care for a Tumi ballistic nylon bag?+

Ballistic nylon is hard-wearing but benefits from simple upkeep: wipe it down with a damp cloth, let it dry fully, and keep zippers clear of grit so they glide. For anything structural, lean on Tumi's repair service rather than improvising, since the brand backs its bags well beyond the standard warranty window.
