Founded by Barbara Bradley Baekgaard and Patricia R. Miller in 1982 and named for Baekgaard's mother, Vera Bradley turned bright, feminine luggage into an American institution.

The idea struck the pair in a Florida airport, surrounded by bland, masculine carry-ons; back in Indiana they borrowed $500, bought fabrics inspired by the Pierre Deux French Provençal look, and had a friend sew prototype bags. The business ran out of Baekgaard's basement — the first logo drawn by her teenage daughter, mother Vera herself a sales rep in Florida — and the distinctive florals, paisleys and elongated diamond quilting became the brand's signature, released in limited seasonal patterns.

Incorporated on 15 November 1982, the company grew through Marshall Field's and small shops, then online from 2004, and built the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer, created in 1998 after the loss of a close friend and sales representative. Its best-known piece remains the Original Tote Bag.

Vera Bradley shopping FAQ

Are Vera Bradley bags worth it?+

For lightweight, washable, pattern-forward bags at an accessible price, Vera Bradley earns its following. The quilted cotton is durable and easy to live with, and many owners report bags lasting for years of regular use. If you want something colorful, practical, and fuss-free rather than a status leather bag, it is a sensible buy.

Are Vera Bradley bags good quality?+

The brand's signature is its quilted cotton construction, which is light, sturdy, and famously machine-washable, so a tired bag can come back looking close to new. Opinions vary on the fabric feel and some longtime fans debate changes over the years, but the durability and washability are consistent praise points. For everyday and travel use, they hold up well.

How do I wash a Vera Bradley bag?+

Most quilted cotton styles are machine-washable, though you should always check the care label first since not every premium-cotton or hardware-heavy style qualifies. Close all zippers, place the bag in a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase, use a gentle cold cycle with mild detergent, and remove any cardboard base inserts beforehand. Air-dry flat or hung to keep the shape; skip bleach and harsh chemicals.

What makes Vera Bradley's look so recognizable?+

The hallmark is bold pattern: distinctive florals, paisleys, and geometric prints paired with complementary linings, finished with the brand's signature elongated diamond quilting. The patterns were originally inspired by French Provençal country fabrics and arrive in limited seasonal releases. That mix of print and quilting is instantly identifiable as Vera Bradley.

Who founded Vera Bradley and when?+

Vera Bradley was founded in 1982 by Barbara Bradley Baekgaard and Patricia R. Miller, and the company was incorporated on November 15 that year. The two had met in 1975 in Fort Wayne and first ran a wallpapering business together called "Up Your Wall." The bag company grew out of that partnership.

Why is the brand called Vera Bradley?+

The company is named after Vera Bradley, the mother of co-founder Barbara Bradley Baekgaard. Family was central to the business from the start: the first logo was created by Baekgaard's teenage daughter, and Vera herself became a sales representative in Florida. That family origin is woven into the brand's identity.

How did Vera Bradley start?+

While waiting in an airport on the way back from a Florida trunk show, the founders noticed how bland and masculine most travelers' carry-on bags were and thought women might want something brighter and more feminine. Back in Indiana they borrowed $500 from their husbands, bought fabrics inspired by the Pierre Deux French Provençal look, and had a seamstress friend sew prototype bags. The bags sold so well that the business soon ran out of Baekgaard's basement.

What does Vera Bradley make besides bags?+

The brand began with luxury cotton bags and has since expanded into fashion and home accessories, office supplies, and patterned gifts. A millennial-focused refresh also introduced microfiber and leather goods, plus technical accessories like bags with grommets and pockets for charging devices, laptops, and tablets. So the patterned world now stretches well beyond the original cotton totes.

Where is Vera Bradley based and who runs it now?+

The company's home office is in Roanoke, Indiana. In March 2026 it named Ian Bickley as Chairman and CEO. From its Indiana roots it has grown into a national American travel-gear and accessories brand.

Where can I buy Vera Bradley?+

Early on the bags were sold through small shops and through Marshall Field's, and the company began selling online in 2004, which broadened its reach considerably. It is also known for events like the popular annual Spring Outlet Sale in Fort Wayne. Today you can shop the brand online and across many retailers carrying its seasonal patterns.

Are older Vera Bradley patterns collectible?+

Because the prints are released in limited seasonal runs and then retired, certain older patterns develop a following among fans and collectors. The brand's pattern-driven, seasonal model is exactly what gives retired prints their appeal. If you love a current print, it is worth remembering it will not be around forever.

How do I keep a Vera Bradley bag looking new?+

Wash it gently only when needed, using a mesh bag and cold water, and remove any structural cardboard inserts before cleaning. Spot-clean small marks between washes, and air-dry rather than tumble-dry to protect the cotton and quilting. Treated this way, the quilted patterns stay bright through years of use.
