The company is named after Vera Bradley, the mother of co-founder Barbara Bradley Baekgaard. While waiting in an airport on the way back from a Florida trunk show, the founders noticed how bland and masculine most travelers' carry-on bags were and thought women might want something brighter and more feminine. Back in Indiana they borrowed $500 from their husbands, bought fabrics inspired by the Pierre Deux French Provençal look, and had a seamstress friend sew prototype bags. The bags sold so well that the business soon ran out of Baekgaard's basement.

The brand began with luxury cotton bags and has since expanded into fashion and home accessories, office supplies, and patterned gifts. A millennial-focused refresh also introduced microfiber and leather goods, plus technical accessories like bags with grommets and pockets for charging devices, laptops, and tablets. So the patterned world now stretches well beyond the original cotton totes.

The company's home office is in Roanoke, Indiana. In March 2026 it named Ian Bickley as Chairman and CEO. From its Indiana roots it has grown into a national American travel-gear and accessories brand.

Early on the bags were sold through small shops and through Marshall Field's, and the company began selling online in 2004, which broadened its reach considerably. It is also known for events like the popular annual Spring Outlet Sale in Fort Wayne. Today you can shop the brand online and across many retailers carrying its seasonal patterns.

Because the prints are released in limited seasonal runs and then retired, certain older patterns develop a following among fans and collectors.
