Story & heritage
Barbour dates the Bedale to 1980, when Margaret Barbour designed a lightweight thornproof short jacket for equestrian use. Its shorter length and relaxed fit explain why vintage Bedales cross so easily from countryside kit into city outerwear.
The appeal is patina rather than perfection. A rewaxed Bedale can show years of creases, sleeve shine and collar wear while still reading as intentional.
Materials & craft
Barbour's current Classic Bedale uses 6oz Sylkoil waxed cotton, a two-way zip with studded storm front, moleskin-lined handwarmer pockets, bellow pockets, a corduroy collar and Original Classic Tartan cotton lining.
How to choose & style
Olive is the vintage default and works best with denim, cords and chunky knits. Navy or black feels cleaner with tailoring. If buying secondhand, check sleeve length, wax smell and whether it needs a reproof.
