Where to Start With Jacquemus: The First Piece Worth Buying

If you are buying your first Jacquemus piece, I would skip the loudest runway joke and start with the item that still works when your outfit is boring.

I tested this as a first-buy exercise, not a fantasy list: would I still want the piece after the tab was closed? That sounds plain. It works.

Jacquemus is the French label Simon Porte Jacquemus founded in 2009, and the brand's best pieces are easy to recognize before you read a logo: tiny handles, sharp rectangles, sun-baked color, cropped proportion, and clothing that looks relaxed until you check the cut. The risk is just as clear. A first buy can turn into a pretty object you never reach for.

I would start with the Bambino, not the smallest Chiquito.

Who Jacquemus is for

Jacquemus makes sense if your wardrobe already has a base layer: denim you wear weekly, plain trousers, simple tanks, a coat that does not need help, and shoes you do not have to think about. The brand adds shape. It should not have to build the whole outfit.

That is why I am careful with the first purchase. A bright micro bag looks great in a saved photo, but the useful test is less romantic: can you carry your phone, card case, keys, and lip balm without feeling punished? Can you wear the color with black, white, denim, and one jacket you already own?

If your answer is no, the piece may still be fun, but it is not the first one I would buy. Jacquemus is best when the proportion feels playful and deliberate. When it is too small, too tight, or too dependent on one outfit, the charm starts to feel like homework.

The official Jacquemus US page calls it a small handbag with an adjustable crossbody strap, made in Italy. That strap matters. A first designer bag has to survive the walk from dinner to the train, not just sit on a table beside a drink.

The negative: The Bambino, or Le Bambino if you follow the French product naming, is still a small bag. It is not the one I would choose for a work laptop, a packed day, or a person who treats a handbag like a portable drawer. It asks you to edit. But it does not ask you to pretend your phone is optional.

What to avoid as a first buy

Avoid the tiniest novelty color if this is your first Jacquemus purchase and your budget has a ceiling. I know the candy shades are tempting. I also know how fast they become weekend-only.

The Chiquito, often searched as Le Chiquito, is the brand's clearest icon, and I do like it. But the official black Chiquito page describes it as a signature leather mini handbag, and mini is the word to respect. If you already own a practical black shoulder bag, it can be the fun first buy. If you need one piece to do the most work, I would not start there.

Do not treat a markdown as a fit strategy either. If the color is wrong or the size is awkward, the sale price will not fix the feeling. The cheaper mistake is still a mistake.

For bags, I check four things before I let myself care about color: phone fit, strap drop, closure, and whether the handle feels stiff enough to keep its shape. The Bambino has the crossbody strap advantage. The Chiquito has the stronger icon advantage. Those are different jobs.

That size range gives more room to choose carefully than a one-size accessory. Still, it is not a cheap shirt. I would only buy it if the collarless neckline and stripe scale feel like something you would wear twice a month.

Price and construction checkpoints

My entry shortlist has a narrow price band: Bambino at $870, Chiquito at $790, Venice shirt at $790. That helps. You are not choosing between a harmless trinket and a huge investment; you are choosing the job you need the piece to do.

For leather goods, I look for edge paint, stitching, handle stiffness, strap hardware, lining, closure feel, base shape, and whether the bag stands cleanly when it is not stuffed. For the shirt, I care about stripe placement, collarless neckline, placket finish, shoulder line, button spacing, fabric hand, hem length, and wrinkle behavior after sitting.

Tactile detail matters here. A good Jacquemus bag should feel structured and smooth in the hand, not papery or limp. A good shirt should feel crisp without being board-stiff. If either piece feels delicate in the wrong way, I would rather walk away.

The receipt test I used

My receipt test is simple: I picture the piece on a rushed weekday, not on a vacation version of myself. Tiny test. If it only works with one outfit I do not wear, I do not count it as a smart first buy.

The Bambino passes because it can go with a satin dress, denim, a black coat, white trousers, and the shoes already by the door. The Chiquito passes only if you are buying charm and know it. The Venice shirt passes if your wardrobe needs a top more than another bag.

I also ask what the purchase will trigger. If the bag makes your existing clothes feel sharper, good. If it makes you feel like you need new shoes, new trousers, a tan, and a new personality, it is asking too much.

For my money, the first Jacquemus piece should feel slightly more interesting than your basics, not separate from them. That is the line.
