'47 began in 1947, when Italian-born twin brothers Arthur and Henry D'Angelo bought a street cart to sell baseball pennants and souvenirs near Fenway Park — the name honours the year the business was founded.

The D'Angelos became, in effect, founding fathers of the modern sports-licensing industry. Known to Red Sox players from Ted Williams to Carl Yastrzemski, they built a family business — originally Twins Enterprise — that today owns and operates the Red Sox Team Store across from Fenway and is headquartered in Westwood, Massachusetts.

Renamed '47 Brand in 2010 and simply '47 in 2015, the brand grew into licensed headwear, apparel and gear for the NFL, MLB, NBA, MLS, college teams and beyond, with partnerships reaching Liverpool FC and NASCAR. '47 has been owned by the New Era Cap Company since August 2024.

'47 shopping FAQ

Are '47 hats good quality and worth it?+

'47 has spent decades building a reputation for well-made licensed headwear, and most fans find the caps hold up well over years of wear. The brand leans on soft, broken-in fabrics and clean team graphics rather than flashy gimmicks. For an officially licensed cap of your team, it is widely seen as a dependable, fairly priced pick.

What is the difference between the '47 Clean Up and the Franchise?+

The Clean Up is '47's relaxed, curved-brim adjustable cap, the classic "dad hat" with a soft, washed, worn-in look and a strap-back closure. The Franchise is the fitted version, sized rather than adjustable, with a similar low-profile, relaxed feel. Choose the Clean Up if you want one-size adjustability, and the Franchise if you prefer a tailored fitted cap.

Which '47 cap should I buy first?+

For most people the Clean Up is the easiest place to start, since its adjustable strap fits nearly everyone and the soft crown is comfortable straight out of the box. If you already know your hat size and prefer a clean fitted look, go for the Franchise instead. Either way, pick your favorite team's colorway, since licensed team graphics are the heart of the brand.

Who founded '47 and when?+

'47 was founded by twin brothers Arthur and Henry D'Angelo, Italian immigrants who began selling pennants and souvenirs near Boston's Fenway Park. In 1947 they acquired a street cart to grow their sales, the moment the company traces its start to. The name '47 honors that founding year.

Why is the brand called '47?+

The name comes directly from 1947, the year the D'Angelo brothers got their street cart going near Fenway Park and effectively launched the business. They are credited as founding fathers of today's sports-licensed apparel industry. The apostrophe-47 name keeps that origin year front and center.

What is '47's connection to the Boston Red Sox and Fenway Park?+

The brand's roots run deep at Fenway. The D'Angelos were well known to the Red Sox, including players Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski, and the company now owns and operates the Red Sox Team Store across from the ballpark. In 2013 the city honored Arthur D'Angelo by naming a nearby street "Arthur's Way."

Was '47 always called '47?+

No. The business was originally called Twins Enterprise, a nod to the founding twin brothers. It changed its name to '47 Brand in 2010, then dropped "Brand" to simply become '47 in 2015. You will still see the older names in some older references.

What sports leagues does '47 make caps for?+

'47 holds a broad slate of licenses across major sports. It expanded into official NFL headwear in 2012, added US Soccer and MLS deals in 2015, and secured rights tied to Major League Baseball, including on-field postseason caps. It has also partnered with college programs and international clubs such as Liverpool FC.

Who owns '47 now?+

Since August 2024, '47 has been owned by the New Era Cap Company, another major name in licensed headwear. The brand had been family-run for generations after Arthur and Henry D'Angelo's sons joined the business. Arthur D'Angelo died in February 2024.

Where is '47 based?+

The company is headquartered in Westwood, Massachusetts, keeping it close to its Boston origins. It also runs a large warehouse in Brockton, Massachusetts, and operates the Red Sox Team Store on Jersey Street across from Fenway Park. The New England roots remain central to the brand's identity.
