The house's founding fragrance, Colonia, was created in 1916 in a small perfume factory in the heart of Parma's old town — the city that gives the brand its name.

Acqua di Parma is an Italian art of living company producing fragrances, candles, soaps and handcrafted accessories, all made exclusively in Italy and distributed in 43 countries. When most commercial perfumes were heavy and strong, Colonia's unusual lightness won wide success across Europe, becoming a favourite of high society through the brand's mid-century golden age.

Revived in 1993 by entrepreneurs including Luca di Montezemolo (former Ferrari chairman) and Diego Della Valle of Tod's, the house was acquired by LVMH in 2001 and is now headquartered in Milan. Its logo is the coat of arms of Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma.

Acqua di Parma shopping FAQ

Is Acqua di Parma Colonia worth it?+

If you value heritage and understated Italian elegance, many consider it the pinnacle of the classic barbershop-style cologne. The main trade-off people mention is performance: it is a light, refined scent built on quality ingredients, so expect a gentle, elegant fade rather than all-day power. Think of it as a graceful ritual to reapply, not a long-lasting projection bomb.

Should I get Colonia or Fico di Amalfi first?+

It depends on the mood you want. The original Colonia, created in 1916, is a timeless, aromatic citrus cologne with real heritage, while Fico di Amalfi from the Blu Mediterraneo line is a sunnier, sweeter fig-and-citrus scent that tends to be the more immediately crowd-pleasing pick. Choose Colonia if you love classic, traditional colognes; reach for Fico di Amalfi if you want an easy, summery fig.

Why is Acqua di Parma so expensive?+

A lot of it comes down to craftsmanship and restraint: every range is made exclusively in Italy with careful, hand-finished production, and the house curates a small, considered lineup rather than churning out endless launches. You are also paying for more than a century of Italian heritage that began with Colonia in 1916. Whether that premium feels worth it depends on how much you value pedigree and Italian style.

What is the story behind the original Colonia fragrance?+

Colonia was the company's first fragrance, created in 1916 in a small perfume factory in the heart of Parma's historic old town, the city that gives the brand its name. At the time most colognes were heavy and strong, so this unusually light, refreshing scent stood out and found wide success across Europe. It went on to enjoy a golden age through the 1930s to 1950s among high society.

Why is Acqua di Parma's packaging bright yellow?+

That sunny yellow is the brand's most recognizable signature, carried across its cylindrical bottles and rounded boxes since the original Colonia. The house has deliberately kept that look consistent over the decades as part of its identity. It even introduced a blue variant meant to evoke the energy, sun and colors of the Italian Mediterranean.

What does the Acqua di Parma logo mean?+

The emblem is the coat of arms of Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma, who ruled the duchy from 1816 to 1847. It is a tribute to her reign and to the support she gave in developing Parma's perfume and glass industries. So the logo ties the brand directly to the city and history it is named for.

Where are Acqua di Parma fragrances made?+

Entirely in Italy. The house states that all of its ranges, from fragrances to candles, soaps and handcrafted accessories, are made exclusively in Italy, and they are distributed in 43 countries. That made-in-Italy promise is central to how the brand frames its craftsmanship and value.

Who owns Acqua di Parma?+

Acqua di Parma was acquired by the luxury multinational LVMH in 2001 and is now headquartered in Milan. Before that, in 1993, the brand had been revived by a trio of Italian entrepreneurs including Luca di Montezemolo, the former chairman of Ferrari, and Diego Della Valle of Tod's. Its present-day backing by LVMH sits behind the brand you buy today.

What is the Blu Mediterraneo line, and where does Fico di Amalfi fit?+

Blu Mediterraneo is the brand's collection inspired by the colors and energy of the Italian Mediterranean, and Fico di Amalfi, launched in 2006, is one of its standouts, a fresh fig-and-citrus scent that has become a fan favorite. It is brighter and more playful than the heritage Colonia line. If you want the easy, sunlit side of the brand, this is the family to explore.

How can I tell if my Acqua di Parma is authentic?+

Buy from the brand's own boutiques or established authorized retailers, since light, popular colognes are common counterfeit targets. Check that the signature yellow packaging and cylindrical bottle feel well made, with crisp printing and clean finishing, fakes often look slightly off in color or text. A suspiciously low price for a current fragrance is a warning sign.

When is the best time to buy and wear Acqua di Parma?+

These scents are evergreen, so any time works, though the brand's bright, citrus-forward style shines in spring and summer and during warm-weather travel. The yellow gift sets also make natural presents around holidays and celebrations. Since the colognes lean light, consider sampling first and buying the size you will realistically reapply.
