Alor

Stainless-steel cable meets gold and diamonds — a nautical signature out of San Diego.

Alor
Re-checked daily
Alor is an American luxury jewelry brand built on an unusual material: stainless steel cable, woven into pieces alongside 18-karat gold and diamonds. It is headquartered in San Diego, California.

Founded in 1979 by Jack and Sandy Zemer — Jack a former nuclear engineer at General Electric — the company took its name from their sons, Tal and Ori, who now lead it. Alor first showed its nautical cable-motif jewelry in the early 1980s. From 1992 it ran as a partnership with Phillipe Charriol International under the Charriol USA name; when that ended in 2014, the company reverted to its original Alor identity with a national rebranding campaign.

Since then the house has extended the cable signature into Alor Swiss Watches, a Black Label collection set with rubies and coloured diamonds, and bridal lines including lab-grown rings through Alor EcoEarth. It sells to retailers across Australia, the Caribbean, China, Hong Kong and Mexico.

Alor shopping FAQ

Is Alor jewelry worth it for the price?+

Alor is an American luxury jewelry brand whose signature is stainless steel cable combined with 18-karat gold and diamonds, so part of what you pay for is that distinctive mix of an industrial material finished to a fine-jewelry standard. Whether it is worth it comes down to how much you value that look, since the cable is what sets Alor apart from a plain gold piece. If the woven-cable aesthetic speaks to you, it is a hard thing to find elsewhere.

What is Alor cable jewelry actually made of?+

Alor's pieces largely use stainless steel cable to build their forms, paired with 18-karat gold and diamonds for the accents and settings. The brand has worked in that stainless-steel-and-gold combination since its early years. That blend of a hard-wearing cable with precious materials is the core of the Alor look.

How durable is Alor jewelry for everyday wear?+

The use of stainless steel cable is the practical reason many people find Alor easy to live in day to day, since the material is built to hold its form. The 18-karat gold and diamond elements are the precious counterpoints to that sturdy cable. As with any fine jewelry, gentle care and occasional cleaning keep the cable and the gold looking their best.

Who founded Alor, and where does the name come from?+

Alor was founded in 1979 in California by Jack and Sandy Zemer, with Jack a former nuclear engineer at General Electric. The name "Alor" was drawn from the names of their sons, Tal and Ori, who went on to become the company's principals and presidents. So the brand name is quite literally a family one.

Where is Alor based, and is it an American brand?+

Yes, Alor is an American brand, headquartered in San Diego, California. It was founded in California in 1979 and first showed its nautical cable-motif jewelry publicly in the early 1980s. That Southern California origin is part of the brand's identity.

Why was Alor jewelry once sold under the name Charriol?+

In 1992 Alor entered a partnership with Phillipe Charriol International and formed Charriol USA, and during that arrangement Alor's designs were sold under the Charriol USA name across the U.S. and the Caribbean, even though ALOR International Ltd. remained the parent company. That partnership ended in early 2014, when the company reverted to its original Alor name and ran a national rebranding campaign. So a piece marked Charriol USA from that era may share Alor's design lineage.

What is Alor's Black Label collection?+

Alor released its Black Label collection in 2015. The pieces are made of 18-karat gold and feature overlapping circles and ovals set with rubies, alongside black, colorless and canary diamonds. It represents a more elevated, gem-rich side of the brand beyond the everyday cable styles.

Does Alor make pieces beyond cable bracelets and necklaces?+

It does. In 2013 Ori and Tal Zemer launched Alor Swiss Watches, which carry details such as stainless steel cable bands paired with 18-karat gold and diamond embellishments, echoing the jewelry's signature. In 2017 Alor also moved into weddings with a bridal collection called Down the Aisle. So the cable identity now spans watches and bridal as well.

Does Alor offer lab-grown diamond options?+

Yes. Alor partnered with Diamond Foundry to bring a fully lab-grown designer collection of bridal rings to market under the name ALOR EcoEarth. The brand has also teamed with the non-profit 1% For the Planet to donate a portion of proceeds toward preserving natural resources. So there is a more sustainability-minded path within the range.

Where can I buy Alor jewelry?+

As of early 2024, Alor sells to retailers in markets including Australia, the Caribbean, China, Hong Kong and Mexico, in addition to its home U.S. market. Buying through an authorized jeweler is the surest way to get a genuine piece and proper after-sale support. If you are abroad, checking which retailers in your region carry the line is a good first step.

How should I think about choosing my first Alor piece?+

A cable bracelet is the most recognizable entry point, since the woven stainless steel cable accented with gold is the look the brand is known for. If you want something more formal, the gem-set Black Label pieces or the bridal range show the brand's higher-jewelry side. Let the amount of cable versus gold and stones you want guide the decision.
