Re-checked daily
Joseph Altuzarra, a French-American designer born in Paris in 1983, launched his eponymous luxury womenswear label Altuzarra in New York in 2008.

His training reads like a tour of the couture houses: an internship at Marc Jacobs, a post at Proenza Schouler, an apprenticeship with patternmaker Nicolas Caïto — former head of the Rochas atelier — and a turn as first assistant to Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy. The label was self-financed in its early years with help from his family; his mother Karen served as CEO, and the first collection was picked up by Dover Street Market, Ikram and Barneys New York.

Kering held a minority stake from 2013 to 2020, and the studio has been based in New York's Woolworth Building since 2017. Altuzarra has collaborated with J.Crew and Target, designed the gold gown Awkwafina wore at the 2019 Met Gala, and launched a second line, Altu, in 2022.

Altuzarra shopping FAQ

Is Altuzarra worth it?+

Altuzarra sits in the accessible-luxury bracket, and shoppers generally praise its construction and fabrics as fair for the price. The label is known for sensual, sharply tailored women's ready-to-wear with an artisanal feel rather than logo-driven flash. If you value considered cut and quality materials over a status monogram, it tends to earn its keep.

Which Altuzarra piece should I buy first?+

Reach for the brand's tailoring first, since Joseph Altuzarra's sensual, body-aware cuts are what defined the house. A well-cut dress, a sharp jacket or a knit shows off the construction reviewers tend to single out. From there, the second line Altu, launched in 2022, offers another way into the design language.

What is the difference between Altuzarra and Altu?+

Altuzarra is the main, designer-level women's ready-to-wear collection that Joseph Altuzarra launched in New York in 2008. In 2022 he introduced Altu, a second line, broadening the brand beyond its core runway offering. Think of Altuzarra as the signature line and Altu as a complementary tier.

Who is Joseph Altuzarra?+

Joseph Altuzarra, born in 1983, is a French-American designer of luxury women's ready-to-wear. He was raised in Paris's 7th arrondissement by a Chinese-American mother and a French father, and studied ballet for eight years as a boy. He went on to study art and art history at Swarthmore College before entering fashion.

Where did Joseph Altuzarra train before starting his label?+

His resume reads like a tour of fashion's best workrooms. After interning at Marc Jacobs, he held a post at Proenza Schouler, then apprenticed with patternmaker Nicolas Caito, the former head of the Rochas atelier, to sharpen his construction skills. He later returned to Paris as first assistant to Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci.

When and where was Altuzarra founded?+

Joseph Altuzarra launched the brand in New York in 2008. In its early years it was self-financed with help from his family, with his mother Karen serving as the company's CEO. The first collection was picked up by Dover Street Market, Ikram and Barneys New York.

Did Altuzarra ever do a more affordable collaboration?+

Yes. Altuzarra collaborated with J.Crew in 2012 and with Target in 2014, putting his tailored sensibility within reach of a far wider audience. The Target collection in particular drew a lot of attention from everyday shoppers. These collabs are a good way to sample the aesthetic at a lower price point.

Does Altuzarra show in Paris or New York?+

It has done both. The brand is based in New York, and since 2017 its studio has sat in the city's Woolworth Building. Altuzarra showed at Paris Fashion Week from the spring 2018 season for four years, then settled its runway back in New York in 2021.

Who has worn Altuzarra on the red carpet?+

One of the label's signature moments came at the 2019 Met Gala, where Awkwafina wore an all-gold, full-length Altuzarra evening gown. Joseph Altuzarra accompanied her on the runway and entrance staircase that evening. It remains one of the brand's most cited high-glamour appearances.

Who has a stake in Altuzarra?+

The brand's backing has shifted over the years. The luxury group Kering held a minority stake from 2013 to 2020, and in 2024 the New York-based investment firm P180 took a minority stake. Through it all the house has remained closely tied to its founder and his family's early stewardship.
