His training reads like a tour of the couture houses: an internship at Marc Jacobs, a post at Proenza Schouler, an apprenticeship with patternmaker Nicolas Caïto — former head of the Rochas atelier — and a turn as first assistant to Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy. The label was self-financed in its early years with help from his family; his mother Karen served as CEO, and the first collection was picked up by Dover Street Market, Ikram and Barneys New York.
Kering held a minority stake from 2013 to 2020, and the studio has been based in New York's Woolworth Building since 2017. Altuzarra has collaborated with J.Crew and Target, designed the gold gown Awkwafina wore at the 2019 Met Gala, and launched a second line, Altu, in 2022.
