Amsale

The designer who invented the clean, modern wedding gown — and built a SoHo house around it.

Amsale
Re-checked daily
Amsale Aberra (1954–2018), the Ethiopian-American designer behind the house, founded her bridal label after planning her own 1985 wedding and finding nothing clean and sophisticated to wear — so she advertised for custom gowns and started out of her New York loft.

Born in Addis Ababa, Aberra studied in Vermont and earned a political-science degree before enrolling at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology for fashion design. Her philosophy was a forever-modern approach — simple, refined gowns for the modern woman, recognisable by touches like her illusion necklines. The flagship sits in SoHo, and the line grew to include the Amsale Blue label, The Little White Dress, bridesmaid and cocktail dresses.

Aberra acquired the Christos company in 2005 and launched the Kenneth Pool label, dressed women from Halle Berry to Julia Roberts, and was a member of the CFDA and a trustee of FIT. She won the Legacy Award at the 2012 Black Enterprise Women of Power Summit.

Amsale shopping FAQ

Is an Amsale wedding gown worth it?+

Amsale is a couture bridal house, and brides who value clean, refined design tend to feel it justifies the investment. The label built its name on stunning, simple gowns that fit the modern woman, an approach designer Amsale Aberra described as a "forever" modern take on sophisticated design. If you want a dress that looks timeless rather than trend-driven, that philosophy is the core of the value.

Is Amsale good quality?+

Amsale's reputation rests on couture-level construction. Aberra trained at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology and worked as a design assistant before launching her own bridal company, and her gowns are known for refined details such as the "illusion" necklines she favoured. As with any couture purchase, try the gown on and discuss the fabric and finishing with the salon before committing.

What is Amsale best known for?+

Amsale is best known for couture wedding gowns with a modern, pared-back sensibility. Aberra's signature was clean, sophisticated bridal design at a time when she found the market crowded with fussier styles. That clarity, including her use of "illusion" necklines, became the house's calling card.

Who was Amsale Aberra?+

Amsale Aberra (1954–2018) was an Ethiopian American fashion designer and entrepreneur who built her name in couture wedding gowns. Born in Addis Ababa, she moved to the United States to study and later earned a fashion design degree from FIT. She was a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and a Trustee of the Fashion Institute of Technology.

How did Amsale start her bridal company?+

The spark came in 1985, when Aberra was planning her own wedding and scoured stores for a simple, refined gown. Finding little that was clean and sophisticated, she spotted an untapped niche, placed an advertisement for custom-made gowns, and started the business out of her New York City loft apartment. That personal frustration became the foundation of the house.

What are the different Amsale lines?+

Beyond the core Amsale line, Aberra expanded into the Amsale Blue label for more luxurious gowns, The Little White Dress, bridesmaid dresses and cocktail dresses. She also created the Kenneth Pool label in 2003 for dramatic ball gowns with luxurious fabrics and intricate beadwork, and in 2005 acquired the Christos company, whose gowns lean more romantic with French laces and silk organza.

Where is the Amsale flagship store?+

The Amsale flagship is located in SoHo in New York City. The house also has deep New York roots more broadly: in 2006, Aberra became the third bridal designer to open a store on Madison Avenue. New York has been central to the brand's identity from its loft-apartment beginnings onward.

Are Amsale gowns just for brides?+

Brides are the heart of Amsale, but the house grew beyond wedding gowns. Aberra expanded the offering to include bridesmaid dresses, cocktail dresses and The Little White Dress alongside her bridal lines. So while the couture wedding gown is the signature, there is more than one occasion the house dresses for.

Has Amsale appeared in popular culture?+

Yes. In 2007, ABC purchased an Aberra wedding dress for the third-season finale of Grey's Anatomy, and that same year Lincoln hired her to produce a television commercial for its MKX model. In 2011, WE tv aired Amsale Girls, a reality show set in the brand's Madison Avenue flagship salon. The label has had a real presence on screen as well as on the aisle.

How does Amsale's minimalist style compare to other bridal designers?+

Amsale carved out its niche specifically around clean, simple sophistication rather than heavy embellishment, which sets it apart from more ornate bridal houses. Aberra's "forever" modern philosophy means the gowns aim to look as right years later as on the day. If you are choosing between minimalist designers, the deciding factor often comes down to fit and the particular silhouette that suits you, so trying gowns on is the best guide.
