Armitron

Armin plus electronics — the New York watch brand that put quartz on the wrist of America.

Armitron
Re-checked daily
Founded in 1975 by American immigrant and Holocaust survivor Eugen Gluck, Armitron took its name from Armin and electronics — beginning with LED-powered, five-function digital watches.

Headquartered in Little Neck, New York, the brand built early watches with Swiss cases and Hong Kong bracelets before LCD displays and accurate Japanese quartz movements took over, adding alarms and chronographs along the way. Through the 1980s, Jerry Rice, Boomer Esiason, Larry Bird and other athletes endorsed the brand, and Armitron has remained an Official Sponsor of the New York Yankees and a clock sponsor at Yankee Stadium.

Today Armitron still produces quartz and automatic timepieces for men and women; in December 2025 its parent, E. Gluck Corporation, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Armitron shopping FAQ

Are Armitron watches good quality and worth it?+

Armitron sits firmly in the affordable, everyday category and is best judged on that basis. The brand has been making accurate, durable timepieces since it moved to LCD displays paired with Japanese quartz movements, and it still produces both quartz and automatic watches for men and women today. If you want a dependable watch for daily wear without spending much, it delivers; just set expectations at budget-friendly rather than luxury.

How does Armitron compare to Casio and Timex?+

All three live in the same affordable, do-everything space, and the choice is mostly about feel. Armitron is an American brand that today offers both quartz and automatic models for men and women. Many buyers cross-shop it against Casio and Timex; if you simply want a reliable, inexpensive watch and like Armitron's look, it competes well, while die-hard durability fans often gravitate to the others. There is no wrong answer at this price.

Is Armitron an American brand?+

Yes. Armitron is an American watch brand and manufacturer headquartered in Little Neck, New York. It was founded in 1975 by Eugen Gluck, an American immigrant and Holocaust survivor, and the company behind it, E. Gluck Corporation, has long been the home of the brand.

What does the name Armitron mean?+

It is a blend, not a word. The Armitron name is a combination of Armin, from Armin Corporation, the company Armitron was originally connected to, and electronics. That nod to electronics fits the brand's origins making electronic digital watches.

What kind of watches did Armitron originally make?+

Armitron started in the digital era. At its founding it specialised in LED-powered, five-function digital watches that showed hour, minutes, second, day and date. Early on it often used cases from Switzerland and bracelets from Hong Kong, before evolving with the technology toward LCD displays and Japanese quartz movements.

Does Armitron make analog or digital watches?+

Both, and that range is part of the appeal. The brand began with LED and then LCD digital watches, and today it produces a range of quartz and automatic movement timepieces for men and women. So whether you want a sporty digital or a more traditional analog dress watch, Armitron covers it.

Why is Armitron so associated with sports?+

Sports endorsement was central to the brand's rise. Through the 1980s Armitron was widely identified with professional sports teams and athletes, with endorsers including Jerry Rice, Boomer Esiason, Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden and Larry Bird. That heritage continues, as Armitron has remained an Official Sponsor of the New York Yankees and a clock sponsor at Yankee Stadium.

Who founded Armitron?+

Armitron was founded in 1975 by Eugen Gluck, an American immigrant and Holocaust survivor, through the E. Gluck Corporation. After E. Gluck and the original Armin Corporation severed ties in the late 1970s, E. Gluck became a privately held company and kept the Armitron brand, which it has run ever since.

Are Armitron watches accurate and durable?+

For their price, they hold up well. Once Armitron combined LCD displays with Japanese quartz movements, the resulting watches were described as extremely accurate and durable, and the brand later added features such as alarms and chronographs. These are built as practical everyday timekeepers rather than heirloom pieces, and that is exactly where they earn their keep.

How should I care for an Armitron quartz watch?+

Keep it simple. Have the battery swapped by a watch shop when the quartz movement stops, wipe the case and band to keep them clean, and respect the stated water resistance rather than assuming it is dive-ready. For resin or metal sport models, an occasional rinse after sweat or saltwater goes a long way toward keeping them looking sharp.
