Story & heritage
Ballantyne began knitting in 1921 with practical men's golf hose before expanding into cashmere pullovers and women's sweaters. The half-zip feels connected to that sporty beginning: still cashmere, but easier and more casual than the formal V-neck or cardigan.
Farfetch lists the current half-zip sweater with a light beige body, half-zip fastening, long sleeves, ribbed cuffs and hem, cashmere composition, and UK manufacture.
Materials & craft
The zipper changes how the knit behaves. Closed, it acts like a short stand collar; open, it relaxes into a soft polo shape. The best versions keep the body plain so the cashmere texture and ribbing carry the detail.
How to choose & style
This is the travel knit: wear it with flannel trousers, corduroy, or dark denim, and let the zip replace a scarf indoors. Beige and grey are easiest; brighter vintage intarsia versions turn the half-zip into a collector piece.
