Story & heritage

The double-breasted gold-button blazer is the Balmain icon — the single most recognisable piece in the house. Its DNA is military: sharply built shoulders, a cinched waist, and rows of gold-toned buttons that descend from the officer's and uniform tailoring Balmain has drawn on since its post-war years, when Pierre Balmain dressed stars from Ava Gardner to Brigitte Bardot.

Under Olivier Rousteing — creative director from 2011 to 2025 — the structured, embellished blazer became the centrepiece of the brand's modern, celebrity-driven identity, the 'Balmain Army' silhouette. The six-button version is the canonical cut: power shoulders, a waisted body, and the gold lion-head buttons that are a house signature in their own right.

Materials & craft

The blazer is built with Italian tailoring over sharply structured, padded shoulders that taper to a nipped-in waist — the silhouette doing the work before the buttons even register. The defining detail is the gold-toned lion-head buttons, set in a double-breasted arrangement (the classic six), with a peak lapel and clean flap pockets. It runs in grain de poudre wool, tweed, Prince of Wales jacquard, lambskin and crystal-and-bead embroidered versions.

How to choose & style

The six-button blazer is a statement on its own — the shoulders and gold buttons carry a whole look, so it sits best over something plain: a tee and tailored trousers, or worn as a mini-dress with bare legs the way Balmain styles it. Black grain de poudre or tweed is the timeless, most versatile icon; the embroidered and jacquard versions push it toward full house drama.
