Pierre Balmain opened his own house in Paris in 1945, dressing the stars of the postwar era and turning his name into a byword for French elegance.

Balmain dressed Ava Gardner, Brigitte Bardot and Queen Sirikit of Thailand in the years after the war, and launched its first fragrance, Jolie Madame, in 1949. After the founder's death in 1982 the house passed through a roll-call of designers — Erik Mortensen, Oscar de la Renta, Christophe Decarnin — each translating Balmain's appetite for classic silhouette and detail.

Olivier Rousteing took the studio in 2011 at twenty-five and held it for fourteen years, debuting the house's first accessory line in 2017 and a new logo in 2018. Acquired by Qatari investment firm Mayhoola in 2016, Balmain runs more than fifty stores worldwide, with its flagship on Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris. Antonin Tron was named creative director in 2025.

Balmain shopping FAQ

Why is Balmain so expensive?+

Balmain is a French luxury house, and its prices reflect both craft and status. Pieces are made to a high standard of finishing and detail, and the brand's strong identity carries real cachet among fashion followers. As with any logo-driven luxury, some items are paying for the name as much as the materials, so the value depends on how much you prize the Balmain aesthetic.

Is a Balmain blazer worth the investment?+

The structured Balmain blazer is the house's calling card, prized for its sharp shoulders and nipped waist that few competitors replicate. If you want one statement tailoring piece that instantly reads as Balmain, it is a defensible splurge that anchors many outfits. If you mostly want the logo on a t-shirt, the value case is weaker.

Balmain vs Saint Laurent, what's the difference?+

Both are storied French houses, but they pull in different directions. Balmain, founded in 1945, leans into bold, glamorous, heavily-detailed tailoring with a strong silhouette, while Saint Laurent is associated with sleeker, rock-leaning French minimalism. Choose Balmain for unapologetic statement glamour; choose Saint Laurent for pared-back edge.

Who founded Balmain and when?+

The house was founded in 1945 by French couturier Pierre Balmain (1914–1982), who opened under his own name in Paris and showed his first collection in October that year. He launched his first fragrance, Jolie Madame, in 1949. The brand has carried his name and Parisian couture heritage ever since.

What was the Olivier Rousteing era at Balmain?+

Olivier Rousteing led Balmain as creative director from 2011 to 2025, a remarkable 14-year run that defined the brand's modern, social-media-savvy glamour. During his tenure he debuted Balmain's first accessory line in 2017 and introduced the brand's new logo in 2018. His departure was announced on November 5, 2025.

Who is the creative director of Balmain now?+

Antonin Tron was announced as Balmain's new creative director on November 12, 2025, succeeding Olivier Rousteing. He inherits a house with a sharply defined glamorous identity, so collectors are watching closely to see how he evolves it. Until his collections land, much of the in-market product still reflects the Rousteing era.

Who owns Balmain?+

Balmain is owned by Mayhoola for Investments, the Qatari investment firm, which acquired the house in 2016 for a figure reported at more than €460 million. Before that, Balmain had been majority-controlled by heirs of Alain Hivelin. The brand does not regularly publish detailed financials.

Which designers have shaped Balmain over the years?+

After Pierre Balmain, the house was led by Erik Mortensen (1982–1990), then briefly Hervé Pierre, followed by the influential Oscar de la Renta (1993–2002), Christophe Decarnin (2005–2011), and the long Olivier Rousteing era (2011–2025). That lineage of strong names is part of why Balmain carries such designer weight.

Did Balmain ever do an H&M collaboration?+

Yes. In November 2015 Balmain released a one-off collaboration with the Swedish retailer H&M, bringing the house's signature glamour to a mass-market price for a single drop. It became one of the more talked-about designer collaborations of its kind, and original pieces still circulate on the resale market.

Where are Balmain's flagship stores?+

Balmain's primary flagship is on Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris, with additional flagships in Tokyo, New York City, London and on Via Montenapoleone in Milan. The house operates more than 50 stores worldwide, including several in the United States. Paris remains the spiritual home of the brand.

Has Balmain done any notable charity work?+

Yes. In 2018 Balmain partnered with (RED) to auction its custom Met Gala looks, with all proceeds going to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, and it has cooperated with (RED) on later occasions. It is a thread of philanthropy that runs alongside the brand's high-glamour image.
