Walter Barrie and Robert Kersel opened their Hawick factory in 1903, making high-quality stockings and, in the 1920s, two-tone designs for Gabrielle Chanel herself. The company took the name Barrie Knitwear in 1962 and moved to a purpose-built cashmere factory in Burnfoot in 1975, working for fashion houses including Chanel — a relationship that continues to this day. Chanel acquired the company in 2012.
Barrie launched its own label for fall-winter 2014, with each collection designed in its Paris studio and produced in Hawick, Scotland. Some pieces are recognisable by an iconic 3D-knitted thistle, and buttons are made by artisans such as Desrues — Chanel's traditional button supplier. The brand opened its first Paris shop in 2014 and is now active in 22 countries.
