Story & heritage
Freud’s biography traces Ginsberg Is God to Hideous Man, her 2002 short film about Beatnik girls waiting in a club for a favourite poet. She wanted the lead character to wear something like band merchandise for literature and art, and the phrase became the jumper.
The same official story preserves the back-of-jumper joke: an assistant’s malapropism, Godard is Dog, became part of the design language rather than being corrected away.
Materials & craft
The official product describes a merino wool crew-neck with intarsia writing: Ginsberg Is God on the front and Godard Is Dog on the back. It is cut to sit neatly to the body with long sleeves plus ribbed crew neck, hem and cuffs.
How to choose & style
Treat it as a black knit first and a slogan second: it is strongest with straight denim, a narrow skirt, or plain tailoring. The oversized version gives the phrase more slouch and works well half-tucked.
