Story & heritage

Bethany Williams’ official project archive says Selfridges commissioned a capsule coat collection after the AW20 No Recourse to Public Funds collection, which featured a blanket coat.

The project was inspired by the brand’s ongoing work with The Magpie Project, where the Women’s Institute community creates a personal blanket for every baby born into the Magpie Family.

Materials & craft

The official page says the coats used vintage and antique wool blankets sourced from UK vintage sellers, antiques markets and car boot sales.

The garments were handcrafted in London in three jacket styles, using patchwork techniques and details informed by Bethany Williams’ research into childrenswear with the V&A Museum of Childhood.

How to choose & style

Keep the coat’s blanket scale visible with cropped trousers or simple knitwear underneath.

The patchwork already carries pattern and texture, so choose quiet shoes and let the lapel shape frame the outfit.
