Hechter opened a boutique the same year and became known for sporty casual wear, with a stated goal of offering wearable yet high-quality, creative fashion for a wide range of people. Brigitte Bardot helped bring his designs to a wider audience after wearing one of his outfits in La Parisienne, and in 1971 he became one of the first designers to produce dedicated ranges for skiing and tennis. Over time the label grew into an international house spanning seven collections, and a first perfume followed in 1989.
Beyond fashion, Hechter was an early financial backer and, from 1974 to 1978, president of Paris Saint-Germain — designing the club's new home colours, still known as the "Hechter shirt."
