Born in San Francisco in 1967 to a fourth-generation Chinese American family whose grandparents ran a garment factory, Lam studied at Parsons and spent his early career with Michael Kors before striking out alone. In 2005 he won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund runner-up prize and the CFDA Perry Ellis Swarovski Award for new designers.
From 2005 to 2010 Lam also served as Tod's creative director for ready-to-wear and accessories. He launched the Derek Lam 10 Crosby diffusion line in 2011, and in 2024 joined the Italian brand Callas Milano as creative director.

If you value restrained, well-made American design over logos, it tends to land well. 10 Crosby is the more accessible, contemporary line that grew to account for the majority of the business, so it offers Derek Lam's quiet aesthetic at an easier price than his runway collection. Buy it for the cut and the everyday wearability rather than for status.
Lam is known for a minimalist, easy-chic American sensibility built on clean lines and quality over flash. Think pure, modern shapes in a calm palette, occasionally cut through with a single bold colour. It's quiet, considered womenswear designed to be worn rather than performed.
The eponymous Derek Lam label was the higher-end luxury collection, while Derek Lam 10 Crosby, launched in 2011, is the more contemporary diffusion line. In 2019 Lam actually closed the luxury collection to focus on 10 Crosby, which by then made up around 70 percent of the company's overall business.
Derek Lam, born in 1967 in San Francisco, is an American fashion designer of Chinese American heritage. He's a fourth-generation American whose grandparents ran a San Francisco garment factory specialising in bridal and wedding dresses, and he graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1990.
Yes. Early in his career Lam worked as an assistant to Michael Kors for four years, and later returned to become Vice President of Design for the Kors line. That grounding in polished American sportswear clearly informs his own restrained, wearable approach.
They share a lineage, since Lam came up working for Kors, but the sensibilities differ. Kors leans into a consistent, glossy American glamour, whereas Lam's work is quieter and more minimalist, prizing clean construction and subtle detail. If you want understatement over statement, Lam is the more whispered of the two.
Lam launched his eponymous label in 2003 and debuted at New York Fashion Week that September. He arrived alongside a celebrated generation of New York designers and quickly built a reputation for refined ready-to-wear.
He has. In 2005 Lam won the CFDA Perry Ellis Swarovski Award for new designers and was runner-up in the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund competition. Those early honours helped establish him as a serious voice in American womenswear.
Yes, the brand expanded well past ready-to-wear into shoes and handbags, plus licensed categories like eyewear and, under 10 Crosby, a fragrance collection launched in 2015. So you can buy into the Derek Lam aesthetic across a range of accessories, not just apparel.
Sustainability is something Lam has actively folded into his work. He has used non-chromed leather and eco-viscose, and has expanded into recycled cashmere, recycled polyester, and raw eco materials in knitwear. It fits his overall philosophy of thoughtful, considered design.
After ending his work on Derek Lam 10 Crosby in 2023, Lam joined the Italian brand Câllas Milano as creative director in 2024. So while his namesake line lives on under new ownership, his current creative energy is directed at a new house.
