Dolce & Gabbana

Founded in 1985 by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, who met in 1982, the Italian house drew its most important inspiration from Sicilian culture and the golden age of Italian cinema.

Early collections leaned on Visconti's The Leopard and Ferdinando Scianna's black-and-white campaigns, and the so-called Sicilian Dress became the house's sartorial cornerstone. Madonna wore the label as early as 1991 and the duo designed over 1,500 costumes for her 1993 Girlie Show tour; the younger D&G diffusion line ran until it was merged into the main brand in 2011.

Beyond ready-to-wear, accessories and fragrance, the house built its couture identity through Alta Moda, launched in 2012 with a first show in Taormina and later staged at landmarks from La Scala to Piazza San Marco. The label licenses eyewear to Luxottica; Stefano Gabbana stepped down as chair in December 2025.

Dolce & Gabbana shopping FAQ

Is Dolce & Gabbana worth it?+

For buyers who love the house's maximalist, distinctly Italian look, Dolce & Gabbana tends to feel worth it, especially in its leather goods and tailoring. The clothing, accessories and fragrances are made in countries known for those specialties, with the apparel and leather rooted in Italian production. Whether the prestige justifies the price is personal, but the craft itself is generally well regarded.

Why is Dolce & Gabbana so expensive?+

A large part of it is Made in Italy. Dolce & Gabbana's clothing and leather goods are produced in Italy, with factories in Legnano and Incisa in Val d'Arno, and Italian craftsmanship commands a premium. Add the brand's heritage of crystal-encrusted, heavily embellished design and its couture-level Alta Moda work, and the labor and materials add up quickly.

What is Dolce & Gabbana's most iconic piece?+

The so-called Sicilian Dress, from the house's early collections, is often called its sartorial cornerstone. Critic Hal Rubenstein described it as the essence of the brand: a slip-like silhouette that fits tightly through the bust, rises at the waist and flares over the hips. It distills the form-fitting, cinema-inspired aesthetic the duo is known for.

Why is Dolce & Gabbana so associated with Sicily and leopard print?+

The designers strongly identify with Sicilian culture and have called it their most important source of style, with early collections like Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) tying directly to Italian cinema. Animal prints run deep too: the 1996 collection Le Eolie featured leopard and zebra, and in 2006 the duo launched the Anamalier line of leopard-print accessories. Together they form the brand's recognizable Mediterranean, baroque signature.

When and where was Dolce & Gabbana founded?+

Dolce & Gabbana is an Italian fashion house founded in 1985 in Legnano by designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. The two had met in 1982 while working for an Italian fashion brand, set up a design consulting studio in 1983, and debuted their first women's collection in 1985 in the New Talents section of Milan Fashion Week, opening their first Milan store the following year.

Who are Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana?+

They are the namesake founders. Domenico Dolce was born in 1958 in Polizzi Generosa, Sicily, and reportedly began designing and making clothes at the age of six; Stefano Gabbana was born in 1962 in Milan. Per the brand's history, Stefano Gabbana stepped down as chair in December 2025, a decision announced in April 2026, while creative direction has long centered on both founders.

What is the difference between Dolce & Gabbana and the old D&G line?+

They were two distinct lines. The main label is Dolce & Gabbana, while D&G was a younger, more expressive and accessible diffusion line launched in 1994. In 2011 the company merged the two under the single Dolce & Gabbana label to concentrate resources on the core brand, so the standalone D&G line was discontinued.

What is Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda?+

Alta Moda is the house's couture project, launched in 2012 as a tribute to Italian artisanship and the Made in Italy tradition. Its first presentation took place in Taormina, Sicily, and over the years shows have been staged at Italian landmarks such as Teatro alla Scala in Milan and Piazza San Marco in Venice. It represents the brand at its most made-to-order and craft-intensive.

What happened with Dolce & Gabbana's 2018 China advertisement?+

In November 2018 Dolce & Gabbana released a series of videos showing a Chinese model clumsily attempting to eat Italian food with chopsticks, which many viewers found racist and dismissive of Chinese culture. The backlash was severe: brand ambassadors cut ties, celebrities withdrew, Chinese e-commerce sites removed its products, and the planned Shanghai show was cancelled. The founders issued a video apology, and the brand later said its accounts had been hacked.

Which Dolce & Gabbana fragrance should I start with?+

The house has a deep fragrance line, and two names anchor it. The One is one of the brand's flagship scents, fronted in a notable 2006 campaign by Gisele Bundchen, while Light Blue is among its longest-running and most recognizable. Either is a low-commitment way into the brand's Mediterranean sensibility before stepping up to clothing or leather.

Does Dolce & Gabbana offer extended sizing?+

Yes, and it was relatively early to do so among luxury houses. In 2019 Dolce & Gabbana extended its size range up to UK 22, moving toward greater inclusivity at a time when many high-end labels stopped around UK 16. That makes the brand more accessible than some peers if you sit outside standard sample sizing.

How do I care for Dolce & Gabbana embellished pieces?+

Many signature pieces carry crystals, embroidery or filigree-style trinkets, so treat them as delicate. Avoid machine washing embellished garments, store them flat or padded to protect the decoration, and lean on a trusted specialist cleaner for anything ornate. A well-kept Sicily bag can last well over a decade, so the same care mindset rewards the clothing.
